Aao twist karen gaa uthaa mausam

Though western music was introduced in Bollywood music as early as in 1940s itself, such music remained peripheral for nearly two decades or so. It was only in the second half of 1960s that western music began to take centrestage in Bollywood movie music.
The music director who was mainly instrumental (pun unintended) for this phenomenon was R D Burman.
If one has to pinpoint one particular song that could be said to have catapulted wetern music to the fore, then this song has to be “aao twist karen”. This song popularised westen music and western dance among Bollywood fans as never before.
And who was the singer who sang this landmark song? It was a singer who was (and continues to be) typedcast as a singer of serious semiclassical songs.
But here in this song, Manna Dey shows how good he could be if he was given an opportunity to sing a western song. Here Manna Dey sings this song with the kind of gusto that one associated more with a Rafi or a Kishore kumar.
The lyricist of this western song too was one who was mostly known as a shayar. But here Hasrat Jaipuri , like Manna Dey, lets his hair down and writes a song that became a sort of anthem to be sung at parties those days.
This song was picturised on Mehmood, who was the hero of this movie “Bhoot Bangla” which was his home production.
R D Burman, who had made a steady and conventional debut as a music director with “Chhote Nawab” (1962) underwent a paradigm shift as a music director with this movie, which was his second movie as a music director ( after a hiatus of 3 years since his debut). And incidentally, this movie was not at all an original tune. It was a direct lift from ” Come Let us twist” by Chubby Chucker.
Come what may, this song is a landmark song in the history of Bollywood movie music. Personally I can listen to this song many a times without feeling bored. In fact that is what I have done while posting this song.

Aao twist karen this song kishore da has also sung with manna dey aaj rat ka yeh akhri gana he this is the voice of kishore da the legend

Thanks to you my brother got what he has been looking for since decades. Ever since he saw Bhoot Bangla as a child when it released way back in the sixties, he has been trying to figure out what the singer says after Aao twist kare, for that matter so have I, few days back my brother decided to do a google search and landed here and at last after decades we learnt it is jaag utha mausam

I listened to the song again (after years) with headphones on and realised that it is “gaa utha mausam”.

Even I like this song.
It is light-hearted and fun.
I just love the “Come on baby, let’s do the twist” number of Chubby Checker.
