Jab andheraa hotaa hai aadhi raat ke baad

There are several songs that play at the very beginning of the movie as the credits begin rolling in on screen. I have not yet had a category for them, but I think I should call such songs as movie opening songs. They open the movie like how opening batsmen open an innings in a cricket match.

Song-Jab andhera hota hai aadhi raat ke baad (Raja Rani) (1973) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
jab andheraa hotaa hai
aadhi raat ke baad
ek chor nikalta hai khaali si sadak pe
ye aawaaz, aati hai
chor-chor, chor-chor, chor-chor, chor-chor
shahron ki galiyon mein jab andheraa hotaa hai
aadhi raat ke baad
ik chor nikaltaa hai, khaali si sadak pe
ye aawaaz aati hai
chor-chor, chor-chor, chor-chor, chora-chor
shahron ki galiyon mein jab
andheraa hotaa hai, aadhi raata ke baad
ek chor nikalta hai khaali si sadak pe
log band kamron mein, chain se jab sote hain
log band kamron mein, chain se jab sote hain
log band kamron mein, chain se jab sote hain
ye jaagtaa hai saari raat bhaagtaa hai
taale toote, hote hain, jab saweraa hotaa hai, yaa
papa papa paraa
papa papaa
papa papaa
jab andheraa
jab andheraa

Is it ‘khaali si sadak’ (empty road) or ‘kaali si sadak’ (black road)? Can’t make out for sure even after listening several times since film’s release. But somehow to me it sounds more like ‘kaali’ (and appears more poetic as well).

Great new category! This “opening song” is one of my favorites. I uploaded some others on YouTube earlier as well that would fit this category – opening songs from films like Mehbooba, Jurmaana, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Hamare Tumhare, Sitamgar, Shaukeen, and The Great Gambler… the common thread being RDB of course. It’s great to see actual songs sometimes as opposed to stock instrumentals.

And the interesting thing about this particular song is that it’s different than the audio recording that’s usually available in soundtracks or compilations. There were lots of variations within the film itself too, every time Rajesh Khanna went on the prowl late at night.

I love, love, love the opening or title songs (whatever you want to call them)!!! Am so onboard with this new category! Off the top of my head I can think of the loony “Crook Crook” from International Crook, the one from The Train, and the great Helen song from “Agent Vinod”…lots more though, especially from RDB.
