Door koyi gaaye dhun ye sunaaye

Here is an absolutely delightful song from “Baiju Baawraa” (1952). I have listened to this song many a times, and still I was not clear which movie this song was from.
It is only just now that I have found out for sure that this song was from this movie. I cannot but help wonder at the creativity of Naushad and Shakeel Badayuni. Just how many great songs have they created in this single movie ? And all these songs have gone on to become timeless classics.
This song is sung by Shamshad Begam, Lata and Rafi. I can see Meena KUmari and Bharat Bhushan in the picturisation, but I am not sure who is the actress who sings in the voice of Shamshad Begam.
This song, as noted above is a timeless classic. This movie, based on the legend of Baiju Baawra, a great musician of the Mughal era, needed great music, and this movie provides just that. And this song is an example of that.

Song-Door koyi gaaye dhun ye sunaaye (Baiju Baawraa) (1952) Singers-Lata, Shamshad Begam, Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad
Lyrics
door koyi gaaye dhun ye sunaaye
tere bin chhaliyaa re baaje na muraliyaa re
ho ji ho
door koyi gaaye dhun ye sunaaye
tere bin chhaliyaa re baaje na muraliyaa re
man ke andar ho pyaar ki agni
ho man ke andar pyaar ki agni
nainaa khoye-khoye ki are raamaa naina khoye-khoye
arre ramaa nainaa khoye khoye
ho abhi se hai ye haal ho
abhi se hai ye haal to aage
naa jaane kyaa hoye
ke arre raamaa na jaane kyaa hoye
neend nahin aaye birhaa sataaye
tere bin chhaliyaa re
baaje na muraliyaa re
ho ji ho
door koyi gaaye dhun ye sunaaye
tere bin chhaliyaa re baaje na muraliyaa re
ho more angnaa laaj kaa pahraa
laaj kaa pahraa raamaa laaj kaa pahraa
paanv padi zanjeer
ki arre raamaa paanv padi zanjeer ho
yaad kisi ki jab-jab aaye
laage jiyaa pe teer
yaad kisi ki jab-jab aaye
laage dil pe teer
ke are raamaa lage dil pe teer
aankh bhar aaye jal barsaaye
tere bin chhaliyaa re baaje na muraliyaa re
ho ji ho
door koyi gaaye dhun ye sunaaye
tere bin chhaliyaa re baaje na muraliyaa re

And if you want to scratch a bit more of the surface :-), how about these 3 songs :
– aaj gawat man mero jhoom ke
– man tarpat hari darshan ko aaj
– o duniya ke rakhwaale.
This movie’s songs completely mesmerised the Indian public. When I was growing up in the 1970s, oldtimers were still talking about Baiju Bawra’s songs. It set the standard – and I think to date no movie has quite matched this.

How about “Jhoole mein pawan ki aayi bahar …”, also from this movie? Raja is right when he says that to date, no movie has quite matched this one for the quality of the songs. Rafi was at his best with O duniya ke rakhwale and Man tarpat hari darshan ko aaj …, and Lata with her Mohe bhool gaye sanwariya …
This movie was truly the standard for songs.

I remember to have read Naushad ji quoting Shamshad Begum’s voice which have a true ‘Hindustani’ essence.
Our tributes to her and may god bless peace to the departed soul.

Recently saw Baiju Bawra. Very nice songs.
In early 50s, when I was in 4th or 5th grade, I used to live within 5 minutes walking distance from Prakash Studio in Andheri East (Mumbai). I had to walk past the main gate of the studio to go the railway station or to my school and remember seeing the huge poster of Baiju Bawra outside the gate.
Anyway, Meena Kumari’s character was named Gauri and her friend named Vasanti’s character was played by the actress named Krishna Kumari. You can hear Vasanti teasing Gauri about Baiju in the film and the song “Door koyi gaaye”begins. Shanshad Begum’s voice is for Krishna Kumari.
