Jab tumhi nahin apne duniyaa hi begaani hai

I associate “Parwaana” (1947) with songs of K L Saigal, though in my younger days, “Parwaana” for me meant a movie of 1971 where Naveen Nischol was the hero and Amitabh Bachchan the villain.
I find that K L Saigal is not the only singer. Suraiyya also sings in this movie. And as was her custom, she sings fo herself. And she is unbelievably and impossibly young in this picturisation.
This sad song, sung by Suraiyya and picturised on her, is written by D N Madhok. Khurshid Anwar is the music director.
Song-Jab tumhi nahin apne (Parwaane) (1947) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD- Khurshid Anwar
Lyrics
jab tum hi nahin apne, duniyaa hi begaani hai
jab tum hi nahin apne, duniyaa hi begaani hai
ulfat jise kahte hain, ik jhoothi kahaani hai
ulfat jise kahte hain, ik jhoothi kahaani hai
jaate huye kyun tumko, is dil kaa khayaal aataa
jaate huye kyun tumko, is dil kaa khayaal aataa
tadpaa ke chale jaanaa ik reet puraani hai
tadpaa ke chale jaanaa ik reet puraani hai
jab tum hi nahin apne, duniyaa hi begaani hai
parwaane ke jalne pe, hansnaa na tamaashaayi
parwaane ke jalne pe, hansnaa na tamaashaayi
hansti huyi shamaa bhi, ik raat ki raani hai
hansti huyi shamaa bhi, ik raat ki raani hai
jab tum hi nahin apne, duniyaa hi begaani hai

A sad song by Suraiya which we used to hum in our childhood though its meaning and impact one could experience later when the adulthood set in. Suraiya looks so young and stunning.

I have liked this song for a long time but didn’t know the film. Suraiya looks lovely (and yes, really really young)!
