Jaa main tose naahin boloon

Posted on: September 25, 2009

As far as Bollywood music lovers are concerned, most of them like songs that are “light” in nature, rather than the heavy duty stuff (viz classical music based). But there are classical music based songs that are so nicely created that one loves to listen to such songs.

Here is one such song from a by now obscue movie called “Sautela Bhai” (1962). This song is sung by Lata. It is written by Shailendra and music is composed by Anil Biswas. What a superb semi classical song it is !

Very nice song. There is another song from this movie ‘ Phool ban bagiya..’ which has awesome dance and melody. Hopefully you will add that someday.

Sautela Bhai is actually, quite a good movie, based on Saratchandra’s novel, and is now available on YT by tommydan55 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uNWcoCE0Fw&feature=g-u-u

From Filmfare’s review of the film:

“When most of our producers are fumbling with formula films, Alok Bharati’s Sautela Bhai comes like a breath of fresh air. A story of two step-brothers, the elder one a good hearted rustic and the younger an educated weakling spoiled by his crooked friends, ‘Sautela Bhai’ presents pleasant vignettes of human values and cultural dignities.” The film is also known for Guru Dutt’s best ever performance as an actor.

Dear Atul ji,

This song was also discussed by Kushal Gopalka, at the get together that I attended yesterday. And he shared some very interesting information about how this song was recorded.

This song may probably be the only one, or maybe one of a very small handful of songs, that has been recorded with Lata ji singing sitting down. Practically all the song recordings are done with the singers standing in front of the microphone. For this song, Anil Da insisted that it has to be recorded with Lata ji singing in a sitting position.

There are only five instruments used in this song. They are – Tabla, Sarangi, Harmonium and Ghunghroo. The fifth instrument is the Tanpura, which was actually played by Lata ji herself, at the time of recording. And so the recording scene is Lata ji sitting down on a raised bench or a dewan, holding a Tanpura in her right hand, the height of th mike adjusted for Lata ji sitting down, and just one instumental musician each on the other four instruments. Listening to the song, one can clearly make out the individual presence of the each instrument, including the Tanpura playing the baseline melody. As we look at the visual, there are exactly these many instruments actually present in the scene.

So sublime a creation – Anil Da used four different raagas in this song. Beautiful piece.
