Ham teri lagan mein magan bahut din bhatke

Posted on: October 30, 2009

Here is another song which is “new” for me. I had neither heard about this song or about this movie called “Zindagi Aur Ham” (1962). This movie had Dinesh (?), Nalini Jaywant, Chand Usmani, David, Mukri etc. The fact that I have not heard about the movie could mean that the movie was a failure at the box office.

The failure of this movie must have affected its songs as a result. This song is sung by Lata and its music is composed by Roshan. Failure of this movie may not have affected Lata and Roshan, but the lyricist must have been badly affected. The lyricist was Shiv Kumar Saroj, an ex Radio Ceylon announcer, who had left the Hindi service of Radio Ceylon to try his hands at lyrics writing in Bollywood movies.

Come to think of it, the words of this song are quite nice, and it is lovely to listen to words that are sanskritised and which are normally not heard in a Bollywood song.

When it comes to the picturisation, I must admit that I am at a loss to identify the lady on whom this song is picturised. It is a toss up between Nalini Jaiwant and Chand Usmani (going by the cast that this movie has) and I am going for Chand Usmani. I hope that I am for once right is my guesswork. 😉
[Note-Oops, I am wrong, as always. Greta tells me that it is Nalini Jaiwant] 😉

PS-I am told that this song has a happy version (picturised on Chand Usmani and others) and a sad version (picturised on Nalini Jaiwant), so I am not entirely wrong. 🙂

Part I Happy

Part II Sad

Song-Ham teri lagan mein magan bahut din bhatke (Zindagi aur ham) (1962) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shiv Kumar Saroj,MD-Roshan

Lyrics

ham teri lagan mein magan bahut din bhatke
dukh paayaa ham ne naam sanam kaa rat ke
ham teri lagan mein magan bahut din bhatke

dil hai ki nahin aataa hai bahlaane mein
dil hai ki nahin aataa hai bahlaane mein
kyaa jaane kyaa ho gayaa ye anjaane mein
ye khel khel mein dekh prem ke latke
dukh paayaa ham ne naam sanam kaa rat ke
ham teri lagan mein magan bahut din bhatke

man mein hai kuchh meethi meethi tadpan si
badhti jaati hai chhaati ki dhadkan si
dil tod na daale prem panth ke jhatke
dukh paayaa ham ne naam sanam kaa rat ke
ham teri lagan mein magan bahut din bhatke

lahron mein bahkar ho gaye nyaare nyaare
lahron mein bahkar ho gaye nyaare nyaare
ham se naiyya, naiyya se door kinaare
armaan na jaane kahaan kahaan jaa bhatke
dukh paayaa ham ne naam sanam kaa rat ke
ham teri lagan mein magan bahut din bhatke

In this video clip, it is indeed Nalini Jaywant. This is a sad version of the song.
In the happy version, this song is sung by Chand Usmaani , one unidentified actor and Nalini Jaywant. Unfortunately, only the partial video clip of the happy version of this song is available. Anyway, have a look at the video clip : http://youtu.be/b4gBd0O71GU

Now that I have watched the entire film, the song has two parts – Happy and Sad. But the Happy part itself is divided in two sub-parts. The first sub-part is picturised only on Nalini Jaywant and Lata Mangeshkar sings for her. After the mukhda of the song gets over, there are dialogues between Nalini Jaywant and Naina after which second sub-part the song starts with antara sung by Suman Kalyanpur (my guess) for Naina and Sudha Malhotra (I am sure) singing for Chand Usmani.

The ‘sad’ part of the song is picturised on Nalini Jaywant and Lata Mangeshkar sings for her. This part of the song comes much after the interval of the film.

A combined video clip containing all the parts of the song below:
