Ud jaa bhanwar maaya kamal kaa

Posted on: November 2, 2009

By 1950s, Bollywood movie songs had came of age. Some of the most memorable songs of all time were created in this decade.

Songs of many genres were created in this decade. One genre of song that I like a lot are the musical showdown songs. In thiese songs, two musical experts would duel each other musically, by singing semi classical songs. Such songs are as thrilling to watch as the fight scenes that Bollywood movies would introduce in 1970s.

These songs were often sung by renowned classical singers who were pitted against mainstream movie singers. For instance, there was this memorable duel in “Basant Bahaar” (1956) sung by Manna Dey and Bhimsen Joshi (legendary classical singer of Hindustani music). Then there were memorable singing duels between less classically inclined singers, viz qawwali song “ye ishq ishq hai” (Barsaat ki raat) where Rafi (singing for Bharat Bhooshan) is pitted against others (singing in voices of Manna Dey etc). And then who can forget the memorable comedy song “ek chatur naar karke singaar” (from “Padosan”).

Most of these songs are between male singers. Singers of two genders entering into a musical duels are not that common.

Here is a semi classical duel between the genders. It is from “Rani Roopmati” (1959) and it pits Manna Dey against Lata.

Bharat Vyas is the lyricist and S N Tripathi is the music director.

In this song, a male classical singer sings a classical song. In his song , he exhorts a magical “bhanwra” ,trapped in the petals of a lotus flower, to free itself and move away. His classical singing has the desired effect and the “bhanwra” frees itself from the flower.

Rani Roopmati (played by Nirupa Rai) sings a classical song countering the earlier song where she exhorts the “bhanwra” to go back into the petals of the lotus flower. And lo and behold, her singing causes the “bhanwra” to go back to the flower and get trapped there once again.

This song is a breathtaking song. Listening to it and watching the picturisation of this song is a great experience. Here is this gem of a song for the listening and watching pleasure of the readers.

ud jaa
ud jaa

bhanwar maaya kamal ka
aaj bandhan tod de

rang iska laal hai
aur roop bhi kya kamaal hai
jin pankhuriyon mein tu jhoome
jin pankhuriyon mein tu jhoome
wo tera janjaal
tera jaal hai
kahin aur jaa jaa jaa
kahin aur jaa ke dil lagaa
kaliyon ki galiyan chhod de
ud ja bhanwar
dekh wo sooraj ki kirnen
aa rahi hain jhoomti
chal gagan ki or
tera mukh hawaayen choomti
baawre uth jaa
makhmal ka ghera door kar
tan hai kaala
is liye man ka andhera door kar
door kar
tujhko bulaaye
tujhko bulaata hai sawera
dekh mukhda mod ke
ud jaa bhanwar
maaya kamal ka aaj bandhan tod ke
ud jaa bhanwar

dha ni sa
ma re
ud jaa
ud jaa
ud jaa bhanwar
sa re ga
ma pa dha
sa ni dha pa ma
aa aa aa aa
ud jaa bhanwar

I listened to this song yesterday and it feels like I have heard this song before, once upon a time, but I have been humming it ever since. What a melodious song! I remember wanting to see this movie just for the song “Aa laut ke aaja …”, so I guess this song wasn’t very popular, but I don’t think this movie became popular, so we never saw the movie. I do admire the music directors who created such gems even for movies that did not have the star cast that would draw crowds.

Thanks for the song, Atul!

Beautiful song. I have a DVD of the film and will treasure it, But I still cannot decipher exactly some of the SARGAM that Manna Daa recites.
