In 1944 Naushad had introduced folk music based tunes to bollywood movies with “Rattan” (1944). One day when S D Burman went to his kitchen, he found his cook singing a song from Rattan (“jab tumhi chale pardes”) with great relish-“jhoom jhoom ke”.
S D Burman realised that folk music based songs would be the way to create popular movie songs that would be liked by the masses, and he too began to use folk music in his songs.
The characteristic tunes of such folk music based songs (so sweetly retro to my “modern” ears) make these songs such a delight to listen to.
The movie “Do Bhai” (1947) is remembered as the movie that gave us Geeta Dutt as a playback singer. Her song “mera sundar sapna beet gayaa” caught everyone’s imagination and this song went on to become a timeless classic. But this movie had other nice songs in it to.
It was just a few hours back that I got to listen to another song from “Do Bhai” (1947). This song too is sung by Geeta Dutt. What a joyously sung song it is. When I listened to this song, I realised that I too was enjoying this song-“jhoom jhoom ke”. Yes, this song has the ability to make you sway to its tune.
Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist of this lovely song, and this song is picturised on Kamini Kaushal.
