I generally describe the songs in this blog as Bollywood movie songs, using “Bollywood movie” as a catchall phrase to describe all Hindi movies. Bollywood was a term that was coined for Bombay’s Hindi movies industry. But in reality, Bombay was not the only place where such movies were made. Places like Lahore (before 1947), Calcutta, Poona also had thriving Hindi movies industry there.
Then there were regional movie industies as well. Gemini pictures, a big production house in South India, which mostly made movies in South Indian languages was the first production house from that region to venture into Hindi movies too. Gemini made a bilingual movie called “Chandrakanta” (1948). The actors were all from Tamil movie industry and the movie was made in Tamil and dubbed in Hindi. The songs in the Hindi version were created by using Hindi movie singers and lyricist. The music director remained the same for Tamil as well as Hindi versions of music.
I have just heard this song from Chandrakaanta” (1948). It is sung by Umadevi (Tuntun) and picturised on T R Rajkumari. Pt Indra is the lyricist and S Rajeshwar is the music director.
I was simply bowled over by this song. Umadevi’s is a voice that I love listeneing to, and what a lovely (retro) voice she possessed. The music of S Rajeshwar Rao is so pleasing to the ears.
The song in the video stops anti climactically when you are expecting to listen to it some more. One stanza is missing from the video. How I wish that the entire song was available for our listening pleasure.
This movie (both versions) proved to be runaway hit. This encouraged Gemini to venture into Hindi movies on a big scale and then went on to create many well known Hindi movies.

S Rajeswara Rao is a Telugu music director, and very popular. Probably the Tamil movie that Atul refers to was dubbed into (or remade) from the Telugu version. I vaguely remember a Telugu movie of the name Chandrakanta or Chandralekha.
The other Hindi movie (remade after the hugely successful Telugu original) that retained the Telugu MD was, perhaps, Suvarna Sundari, with the very pleasing number – kuhoo kuhoo bOlE kOyaliyA
On the flipside, Raj Kapoor’s Aah was dubbed into Telugu (prEma-lEkhalu, Love Letters), and retained all the tunes (Atul – I would like to send a link to the songs there), and credited Shankar-Jaikishan as the MD.
BTW, of the pair, Shankar is a Telugu man. I would like to keep my biases under control, but boy, do they raise their head every now and then!
