Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Dil aane ke dhang niraale hain dil aane ke dhang

Posted on: May 17, 2010

I came across this song from a very old movie called “Singaar” (1949). The artists involved in creating this song are not all that well known today. The singer is Surinder Kaur and the lyricist is Nakshab. Khursheed Anwar composed the music.

The song is lovely to listen to. And the song is picturised nicely too. But who is this lovely lady on whom this song is picturised ? Looking at the details of the movie, I can see that Durga Khote, Madhubala and Suraiyya are the three leading female actors in this movie. This lady cannot be Suraiyya , since Suraiyya sang her own songs. And I am sure that this lady cannot be Durga Khote. That leaves only one option, viz Madhubala. So could this female actor acrtually be Madhubala ? She does not have the same sparrkling screen presence of the Madhubala that we kow from 1950s, but this could well be Madhubala before she discovered her oomph. Or may be I am totally wrong and this actor could be some entirely different individual. Like always, I am relying upon my knowledgeable readers to bail me out.

Here is this lovely song from long long ago- sixty one years ago- to be precise.

Song-Dil aane ke dhang niraale hain (Singaar) (1949) Singer-Surinder Kaur, Lyrics- Nakshab, MD-Khursheed Anwar

Lyrics

kaun samjhegaa
kise samjhaaun dil aane ki baat
ye samajhne kaa fasaanaa hai
naa samjhaane ki baat
dil aane ke dhang niraale hain
dil aane ke dhang
dil aane ke dhang niraale hain
dil aane ke dhang
dil se majboor sab dilwaale hain
dil aane ke dhang
dil aane ke dhang niraale hain
dil aane ke dhang

kabhi ankhiyaan milaane pe aataa hai dil
kabhi ankhiyaan bachaane pe aataa hai dil
kabhi ankhiyaan milaane pe aataa hai dil
kabhi ankhiyaan bachaane pe aataa hai dil
wohi ankhiyaan jinhen hamse matlab nahin
unhin ankhiyon ke ham matwaale hain
dil aane ke dhang
dil aane ke dhang niraale hain
dil aane ke dhang

unko dekhaa to duniyaa badalne lagi
nazren bahkin tabeeyat machalne lagi
dil ki dhadkan ishaaron pe chalne lagi
unko dekhaa to duniyaa badalne lagi
nazren bahkin tabeeyat machalne lagi
dil ki dhadkan ishaaron pe chalne lagi
badi himmat se qaaboo mein rakhaa hai dil
badi mushkil se hosh sambhaale hain
dil aane ke dhang
dil aane ke dhang niraale hain
dil aane ke dhang
dil se majboor sab dilwaale hain
dil aane ke dhang
dil aane ke dhang niraale hain
dil aane ke dhang

Thanks for confirming that it is Madhubala. She does not look as bright eyed and sparkling here as she did in subsequent movies.

Super. But the voice does not suit the very young Madhubala. Maybe that’s why she’s not her sparkly self. Also love the half-saree in Kanjeevaram silk. Maybe this was a Madras studio production.

Nakshab wrote this song for MERI KAHAANI, 1943 which Surendra sang in the film. In SINGAAR, 1949, lyrics are more or less the same except the first six lines of the third stanza.
