Here is a song from the earliest days of Bollywood talkies. This song is from “Jaageerdaar” (1937). It was with this movie that Anil Biswas came to prominence as a music director.
It is such a delight to be able to listen to a song as old as this. Those were very primitive days as far as sound recording technology was concerned. The actors themselves had to sing those days. In case of duet, the singers had to take their turns at the same microphone.Takes were a luxury as it meant spoiling valuable raw material. Despite such primitive conditions, many great songs were recorded those days.
One must also appreciate the fans who collected and preserved the records of songs from those days and share it ever so graciously with other music lovers. I am very thankful to the people who have uploaded this gem, which is in fact should be regarded as an important historical landmark in Hindi movie music.
This song is sung by Motilal and Maya Bannerji. Zia Sarhadi is the lyricist, and as mentioned earlier, Anil Biswas is the music director. No video of this song exist and no accounts of how the song was recorded is available, but I can imagine how things must be like those days. To many youngsters with little appreciation of our heritage (I too was one such youngster four decades ago), a song like this this may be more a source of amusement, but for those who value history, songs like this are priceless gems. It is songs like this that paved the way for the arrival of the golden era of Bollywood music.
