Chhupaa lo yoon dil mein pyaar meraa

Posted on: June 24, 2010

“Mamtaa” (1966) is a movie that is full of great songs. I have posted four songs from this movie, and here is another song.

What an awesome song it is ! The song is sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata. It is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by Roshan. The song is picturised very nicely on Ashok Kumar and Suchitra Sen.

This song has to one the best songs in the careers of the creators of this song. Listening to this song is bound to calm one’s mind and make one feel relaxed.

Lyrics

chhupaa lo yoon dil mein pyaar meraa
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki
chhupaa lo yoon dil mein pyaar meraa
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki
tum apne charnon mein rakh lo mujhko
tumhaare charnon kaa phool hoon main
main sar jhukaaye khadi hoon preetam
main sar jhukaaye khadi hoon preetam
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki

chhupaa lo yoon dil mein pyaar meraa
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki

ye sach hai jeenaa thaa paap tum bin
ye paap maine kiyaa hai ab tak
magar hai man mein chhavi tumhaari
magar hai man mein chhavi tumhaari
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki
chhupaa lo yoon dil mein pyaar meraa
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki

phir aag birhaa ki mat lagaanaa
ke jalke main raakh ho chuki hoon

ye raakh maathe pe maine rakh li
ye raakh maathe pe maine rakh li
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki
chhupaa lo yoon dil mein pyaar meraa
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki
chhupaa lo yoon dil mein pyaar meraa

chhupaa lo yoon dil mein pyaar meraa
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki

Hide my love in your heart, and protect it
Like the flame of the lamp in the safety of a temple

tum apne charnon mein rakh lo mujhko
tumhaare charnon kaa phool hoon main
main sar jhukaaye khadi hoon preetam
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki

Accept me and keep me at your feet
I am but just a flower offered at your feet
I stand here with my head bowed, O beloved
Like the flame of the lamp bowed in worship, in a temple

ye sach hai jeenaa thaa paap tum bin
ye paap maine kiyaa hai ab tak
magar hai man mein chhavi tumhaari
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki

It is true that it was a sing to be away from you
And I am guilty of this sin, thus far in life
But an image of you has always adorned my heart
Like the flame of the lamp adorns a temple

phir aag birhaa ki mat lagaanaa
ke jalke main raakh ho chuki hoon
ye raakh maathe pe maine rakh li
ke jaise mandir mein lau diye ki

Never light this agonizing flame of separation again
I am all but burnt out, and just the ashes remain
I raise this ash to my forehead, and venerate it as my destiny
Like the flame of the lamp is the blessing in a temple

I like this song a lot too but if you are saying this is the best Roshan song, I don’t know. Hemant Kumar is just right for the song too.
Another Mamta song I like is Rahe na rahe hum. One version is picturized on garam Dharam so naturally very watchable.

“Mamta” songs by Roshan are in same category as other Roshan’s classics i..e “Malhar”, “Bawre Nain”, “Barsat ki Raat”, “Dil hi to hai”, “TajMahal”, “Chitralekha”, “Aarti”, “Bheegi Raat”, “Nayi Umar Ki Nayi Fasal”, “Devar” and “Anokhi Raat” etc. I also agree that this song is one of the top songs by Roshan.

As usual Hemant/Lata at his best and lyrics according to situation.
