Kyaa cheez hai mohabbat koi mere dil se poochhe

Posted on: July 9, 2010

I have posted three songs from “Shair” (1949) in this blog, but what are three songs from a musical blockbuster movie that had nearly a dozen songs in it ! I need to post the remaining songs from this movie as well which are just as nice to listen to.

Here is a lovely song from this movie which is sung by Suraiyya and picturised on her. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad. What a sweet and heart warming song it is !

song-Kyaa cheez hai muhabbat koi mere dil se poochhe (Shair) (1949) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ghulam Mohammed

Lyrics

kyaa cheez hai mohabbat
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat
mohabbat
koyi mere dil se poochhe
mere dil se poochhe
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat
mohabbat
koyi mere dil se poochhe
mere dil se poochhe
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat

aapas mein pahle-pahle
miltin hain jab nigaahen
miltin hain jab nigaahen
ban-ban ke jab fasaanaa
aatin hain lab pe aahen
aatin hain lab pe aahen
aise mein dil ki haalat
ho o o
aise mein dil ki haalat
koyi mere dil se poochhe
koyi mere dil se poochhe
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat

jab zindagi ki raaten
aati hain zindagi mein
jab apne dil se baatein
hoti hain chaandni mein
hoti hain chaandni mein
us chaandni ki qeemat
ho o o
us chaandni ki qeemat
koyi mere dil se poochhe
koyi mere dil se poochhe
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat

jab dil ki dhadkanon se
hote hain raag paidaa
dil-dil se mil ke jis dam
kartaa hai aag paidaa
kartaa hai aag paidaa
un do dilon ki qismat
ho o o
un do dilon ki qismat
koyi mere dil se poochhe
koyi mere dil se poochhe
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat
mohabbat
koyi mere dil se poochhe
mere dil se poochhe
kyaa cheez hai mohabbat

God, she is lovely, in a very girl-next-door sort of way. And looks so innocent.

I read a story about Suraiyya and someone who wanted to marry her, but didn’t/couldn’t. The name escapes me for the moment.

The song almost sounds like it could have been from Andaz, which had the Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad Ali combination.

Was it Ghulam Mohammed that predicted a bright future for Lata?

The person who wanted to marry her was Dev Anand , of course.

nodoubt lovely song.
as for krishna’s query of someone who wanted to marry her but couldn’t- he was dev anand who was the leading man of “shair”,the song from which is posted above.
incidentily ,had they married the year would have been 1949 the same as of this movie.
at that time dev anand was climbing the stairs of his career whereas suraiya was already on top.
as for the bright future prediction for lata – it came from ghulam haider.
