Chali kaun se desh gujariyaa tu saj dhaj ke

“Boot Polish” (1953) was a moving tale of orphan kids who struggle to come up in their lives. It is a kind of movie that I personally cannot bear to watch, and I have not watched this movie.
Of course, I watch songs of all movies, including movies that are too painful for me to watch.
Here is a less known song from this movie “Boot Polish” (1953).
This song is sung by Talat Mehmood and Asha Bhonsle. Shailendra is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.
This song is a very special song indeed, because this song is picturised on Shailendra. Yes, Shailendra plays the blind beggar who sings this song and Baby Naaz plays the girl who dances on this song for their livelihood. Ratan Kumar, who plays Baby Naaz’s brother, also watches helplessly.
This little known song is indeed a poignant and moving song.

Song-Chali kaun se desh gujariya tu saj dhaj ke (Boot Polish) (1953) Singers- Talat Mehmood, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
chali kaunse desh gujariyaa tu saj-dhaj ke
chali kaunse desh gujariyaa tu saj-dhaj ke
jaaun piyaa ke desh o rasiyaa main saj-dhaj ke
jaaun piyaa ke desh o rasiyaa main saj-dhaj ke
chali kaunse desh gujariyaa tu saj-dhaj ke
chhalken maat-pitaa ki ankhiyaan
rowe tere bachpan ki sakhiyaan
bhaiyaa kare pukaar ho
bhaiyaa kare pukaar
naa jaa ghar-aangan taj ke
jaaun piyaa ke desh o rasiyaa main saj-dhaj ke
chali kaunse desh gujariyaa tu saj-dhaj ke
door desh mere pi ki nagariyaa
main unki wo mere sanwariyaa
baandhi lagan ki dor ho o o
baandhi lagan ki dor maine sab soch-samajh ke
jaaun piyaa ke desh o rasiyaa main saj-dhaj ke
chali kaunse desh gujariyaa tu saj-dhaj ke
do din jag mein dhoom machaaye
ja ke koi waapas na aaye
khoj khoj thhak jaayen ho o o
khoj khoj thhak jaayen do naina chaand suraj ke
jaaun piyaa ke desh o rasiyaa main saj-dhaj ke
chali kaunse desh gujariyaa tu saj-dhaj ke

I have seen Boot Polish at least 3 times and cried on every occasion. It is such a sad movie,.Set in India of the early 60’s. Reflects the life then and being poor. Baby Naaz is simply excellent. Like many child actors of Bollywood and indeed Hollywood she never gained fame as a grown up actor but she continued to play an active role in cinema in many ways. Sadly she died of cancer in 1965.

Who is the girl in the first half of the song? Is she Baby Shobha? The same one who played young Nutan in “Sujata”? Can anyone shed some light?
Shailendra is awesome in this role.
Boot Polish was released in 1958.

That is one very beautiful song, Atul. Thanks so much for sharing. I didn’t know Shailendra worked as actor also. Really nice and touching number. Asha Bhosle sounds so melodious and so is Talat sahab.

Shailendra in fact acted in a few other movies as well. But this song is perhaps the only occasion when a song was picturised on him.
