Here is a party song from “Phool Aur Patthar” (1966). I became aware of this song only just now, and that too thanks to the farmaish of this song by Dr. Mohan Doshi.
This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, and it could well be a song tailormade for Helen, but here it is Shashikala who gets to perform a Helen like dance. The music could well be R D Burman’s but it is composed by Ravi ! And to round it up, the lyrics could well be Anand Bakshi’s , but it is by Shakeel Badayuni’s.
Yes, it is this kind of a song. It is a fast racy song. Getting most of he lyrics is easy, but I was stumped by the words that the chorus repeatedly sing in this song. It is a gibberish for me, though it could well mean something in some language. I have written down that line as “ho pipi lala nikidala nikidaba yola”. In case some readers with better hearing and/ or familiarity with this line tell me what this line actually is, I will correct this line accordingly.

Thanks for posting this lovely song and that too so soon after I made my “farmaish”.
Shashikala is as good as Helen in these numbers, if not better. God doesn’t make vamps like Shashikala, Bindu and Helen these days. You don’t get any ‘decent’ vamps in the movies today.
Shakeel Badayuni sahab must have literally scratched his head to get these lyrics, they are just not his cup of tea. Great shayars adapt their verses to suit the music directors and the situation.

Wonderful! I’ve loved this song since the first time I heard it. As for the lyrics, it sounds to me like “ho kisi gala pisi dala niki daga yola” and I figure it’s most likely just gibberish. I noted this on Greta’s blog when discussing this song earlier: I believe the lyricist was just trying to capture the essence of the original song on which this was based, “Brazilian Love Song (Andorinha Preta)” by Nat King Cole, video below:

This is a Brazilian Portuguese love song.
“Eu tinha uma andorinha que me fugiu da gaiola”.
Rough pronunciation, “यू थीना उमा आन्दोरीना कि मे फ़ीश्जु दा गइयोला”.
It means,
“I had myself a Swallow (a small passerine bird), that escaped the cage”
The urgent onomatopœic rhythm with which it is uttered, is called 𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑚𝑜 𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑑𝑎. This comes from NE Brazil. It gives the impression of a little bird that has fluttered and flown away.
A small snippet from this Brazilian Portuguese song was used in the Asha Bhonsle solo:
“ज़िन्दगी में प्यार करना सीख ले” from Phool Aur Patthar(1966).
The song starts with a fast roll on the 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗼: the smaller of two bongo drums. The larger of the two bongo drums is called the 𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮.
The song is picturized on Shashikala wearing a platinum blonde wig and black velvet gloves. It was the era of “The Twist” — that iconic dance, emblematic of the early 1960s.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺:
Phool Aur Patthar(1966) was a Dharmendra Meena Kumari starrer — about a plague epidemic. Dharmendra plays a burglar, who burgles houses, deserted by residents due to a serious plague epidemic in the town. In one such house, he encounters a widow, Meena Kumari who has been left to die by her cruel relatives. Dharmendra nurses her back to health and claims her for his own.
Using a tune fragment identical to the Brazilian Portuguese love song, Asha Bhonsle sings, 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠 which can be interpreted as Portuguese, by those that don’t know Portuguese.

You heard this only today? Isn’t it just a lovely, catchy song?
I guarantee you it will stay in your mind for a long time and you will keep singing it sub-consciously. It is that type of song. 🙂
