This title song/ theme song from “Samjhauta” (1973) has gone on to become an iconic song. I was under the impression that I had posted this song already, but farmaishes from several readers made me realise that I had not posted this song so far.
Here is this awesome song from “Samjhauta” (1973). This song is known to the majority as a song sung by Kishore Kumar. But this song has a Lata version as well.
Here are both the versions of this song. Lata version is picturised on Yogita Bali. Kishore Kumar version is picturised on Anil Dhawan as a stage song. Both these movie versions of songs are too brief to satiate the listeners, so I have also included the full audio of Kishore Kumar version of this song.
So here is this memorable song from “Samjhauta” (1973). Indeewar is the lyricist and music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

one small doubt does lata sing it as “Ret Ke Niche Jal ki Dhaara” or “preet ki reeti jal ki dhaaraa” y i am asking is i ve never got that line right and was singing this song along with hearing the Lata version and reading the lyrics. and my song was not synchronising

hey atul and i don’t think u ve posted the full song in the lata version coz i remember i used to sing a line which went “Tum Meri Ankhon Se Dekho Duniya Sari”

I can only hear “Preet ki reeti”. It does not sound like “ret ke neeche” to me, though that makes sense. Perhaps you are right and my ears are playing trick on me.
This video version of Lata that I have linked has only the two paras that I have written down. audio version may have more words, but at present I have not been able to locate that.
Now that you point it out, now I notice that Anil Dhawan plays a blind here.

Thank you for the lata version audio. So I can safely confirm that it was indeed “ret ke neeche jal ki dhara” & also a line that goes “tum meri aankhon se dekho duniya saari” ☺

These are my favourite phrases from my childhood days,
Till to-date,I always hanker for Lata`s this full audio version, which is very rare to listen through Radio also……….,
I used to pester my mother for the correct meaning of these phrases,
I noticed your comments very lately, that too after 5 years, otherwise I would have …………
