O P Nayyar ruled the roost in Bollywood movie music in late 1950s and early 1960s with his characteristic music. During this phase, Rafi and Asha Bhonsle were his male and female singers of choice.
Even in cases when he could not get one of this singers to sing for him, the replacement singer was required to sing in the style originally meant for Rafi/Asha Bhonsle, as the case may be. Thus there were cases when Mahendra Kapoor was asked to sing in place of Rafi in Rafi style, viz. in “Ye Raat Phir Naa Aayegi” (1966).
Now, Mahendra Kapoor singing Rafi style is not such a surprise because Mahendra Kapoor regarded Rafi as his guru and he in fact had actually became his disciple in a “formal” function. But imagine Mukesh singing for O P Nayyar is Rafi style. Yes, this has indeed happened, and I must say that Mukesh has done a superb job. In fact, this song, which is one of the very few occasions when Mukesh sang for O P Nayyar, must be regarded as one of the finest songs created by O P Nayyar.
This song is “ye dil lekar nazraanaa aa gayaa teraa deewaana” from “Ek Baar Muskuraa Do” (1972). I had heard this song before, but I was not aware about the details of this song. So it came as a big surprise for me to realise that this song sung by Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle is a song created by O P Nayyar, which indeed it is.
S H Bihari is the lyricist of this song. The picturisation of this song is reminscent of the picturisation of “Kismat” (1968) song Kajra muhabbat waala ankhiyon me aisa daala. Like the kismat (1968) song, here too the hero and heroine sing and dance of the stage, with the villains nearby. Tanuja, the heroine on the stage, is just as fooled by hero’s disguise as the villains (though the spectators, being smarter knw that it is Deb Mujherji in disguise). The hero, while singing and dancing, also manages to convey to Tanuja his real identity. This the hero does by peeling off part of his false beard, and they attaching it back, all in a flash, too fast for the baddies to notice, but slow enough for the heroine and the spectators to see it.
As mentioned earlier, this is a song sung by Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle, and this is a wonderful song. I am especially impressed by the ability of Mukesh to do such a good work of singing this song in Rafi style.
