“Ratan”(1944), or ‘Rattan” as it is mentioned in old posters, was a turning point in Hindi movie music. Before this movie, the movie music was based on classical music. But the music of this movie broke new grounds and introduced music based on folk music. And the folks (ordinary public) lapped up this music. And soon, every other music director jumped onto the band wagon and Hindi movie music began to enjoy much higher level of popularity among public.
Here is a lovely song from “Ratan” (1944). I had never heard this song before, but when I heard this somg for the first time just a few hours ago, I found the song sounding quite modern. Amir Bai Karnataki, the singer could well have been singing a song of 1970s, that is how modern this song sounds to me.
D N Madhok is the lyricist and Naushad is the path breaking music director of this movie.
Any idea who is the actress on whom this song is picturised ?

Lyrics
mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
haay raamaa mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
haay raamaa mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
mushqil se wo din bhulaaye the hamne
phir aa ke chhedaa balam ne
mushqil se wo din bhulaaye the hamne
phir aa ke chhedaa balam ne
phir se dharak gayin chhatiyaan
dharak gayin chhatiyaan
haay raamaa mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
haay raamaa mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
rote hain nainaa jiyaa talmalaaye
jaao koi unko laaye
rote hain nainaa jiyaa talmalaaye
jaao koi unko laaye
kaise bitaaun din-ratiyaan
bitaaun din-ratiyaan
haay raamaa mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan
haay raamaa mil ke bichhad gayin ankhiyaan

When Naushad got married, the band was playing the tunes of the super hit songs of Naushad’s film Rattan. While Naushad’s father and father-in-law were condemning the musician who had composed these songs, Naushad dared not tell them that it was he who had composed the music.
