Ye jo muhabbat hai ye unka hai kaam

This post is written by Raja, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor of posts to this blog

The first Rajesh Khanna movie I remember watching in my life is Kati Patang. By then his star was on the rise and this movie, blockbuster that it turned out to be, only further confirmed this state of affairs.

His image of a romantic hero had already been created with Aradhana. It got further cemented with Kati Patang, a soft romantic story where he woos young “widow” Asha Parekh. She is not able to openly reciprocate her love for him as she is typically constrained by all those social norms that widows in India need to face. That she is not a widow but just putting on an act, leads to situations of blackmail, emotional torture and all those agonizing moments that Hindi films are very good at conjuring. All in all, a movie that I like a lot and have seen several times.

One of the highlights of Kati Patang is no doubt the music. RD Burman’s stock rose significantly with this movie. And deservedly so. Lata’s “na koi umang” won awards, Asha’s “mera naam hai shabnam” was a big hit, the Holi song became iconic, Kishore’s “pyar deewana hota hai” was a favourite of many and his “ye shaam mastaani” with its breezy tune was on everybody’s lips.

And there was also “ye jo mohabbat hai”. I have a soft corner for this song because it was the first Rajesh song of the first Rajesh movie I remember seeing. I knew the song well before I saw the movie – it was a big hit by itself. I remember that in antakshari programmes whenever it would be the turn of “y”, this would be the first song I would sing. Not “ye shaam mastaani” though I like that song a lot too.

I just noticed that this song has not been covered yet on this blog – it so totally belongs here. In fact, there are lots of Rajesh songs that are not covered yet. I hope to help Atul in clearing his Rajesh backlog. 😀

Song-Ye jo muhabbat hai ye unka hai kaam (Kati Patang) (1970) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

Ye jo mohabbat hai
Ye unka hai kaam
Arrey mehboob ka jo
Bas letey hue naam
Mar jaayen mit jaayen
Ho jaayen
Badnaam
Rehney do chhodo bhi
jaaney do yaar
Hum naa karengey pyaar
Rehney do chhodo bhi
jaaney do yaar
Hum naa karengey pyaar

Toote agar saaghaur nayaa saaghaur koi le le
Mere khuda dil se koi kisi ke na khele
Toote agar saaghar nayaa saaghar koi le le
Mere khuda dil se koi kisi ke na khele
Dil toot jaaye to kya ho anjaam

Ye jo mohabbat hai
Ye unka hai kaam
mehboob ka jo
Bas letey hue naam
Mar jaayen mit jaayen
Ho jaayen
Badnaam
Rehney do chhodo bhi
jaaney do yaar
Hum naa karengey pyaar
Rehney do chhodo bhi
jaaney do yaar
Hum naa karengey pyaar

Ye unka hai kaam
Arrey mehboob ka jo
Bas letey hue naam
Mar jaayen mit jaayen
Ho jaayen
Badnaam
Rehney do chhodo bhi
jaaney do yaar
Hum naa karengey pyaar
Rehney do chhodo bhi
jaaney do yaar
Hum naa karengey pyaar

Hai hai! How did I miss this brilliant song and Raja’s lovely introduction? And I’m all for you helping Atul clear his Rajesh backlog Raja 🙂

I may have mentioned the following anecdote from Rajesh Khanna elsewhere on this blog but here it is anyway since it pertains to this song.

“Once, Pancham and I were flying together to Delhi for the premiere of Baharon Ke Sapne. When the plane took off and started cruising, he started humming a catchy tune. The moment I heard it, I cajoled him to use it for one of my playback songs.

Months later, we were at the sitting of Kati Patang and we just could not get the right tune for a particular song which had a waltz metre. That’s when, fortunately, I could recall the same tune that RD had sung at 32,000 feet. This melody, which was instantly approved by director Shaktida Samanta, was none other than ‘Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai’.”

Thank you, Suhan.
That’s a nice anecdote. Always interesting to hear about how songs are conceived in a writer’s brain or a tune developed by a composer.

As for increasing Rajesh’s presence on this blog, I think it is now beginning to happen. To be fair to Atul, his mission is to put as many melodious/memorable songs out there as he can. He has no agenda in favour of any particular actor. Unlike some of us. Oops. 😉

All I will say is : Follow this space in the coming days. 🙂

I just love this song. Kati patang is one of the first movies I watched and it was spectacular. The combination of rajesh khanna-kishore kumar-rd burman-anand bakshi was fantastic. Rip to these legends.
