Here is a song that can be called an iconic song among iconic songs. “Aa jaa ab to aa jaa” from “Anarkali” (1953) is one of the most well known songs in Hindi movie history. It is from “Anarkali” (1953) the original “Anarkali” movie, which came seven years before the other Anarkali movie namely “Mughal e Azam” (1960).
Bina Rai plays the title role in “Anarkali”. The songs of “Anarkali” are remembered to this date.
This particular song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Bina Rai and others. The picturisation shows Anarkali forced to dance by a “jallad” (torturer) holding a whip in his hand. Watching such picturisations from Medieval era movies is a reminder to us that Human equality that most of us take for granted today was not there in the past. Slavery, and lack of basic human rights was the norm in those dark days. Now a days, many of us enjoy watching movies of the medieval era that depict sanitised views of those days, but n reality those were dark ages of human civilisation. Personally I do not like watching such movies precisely for these reasons.
Coming to the song, the song is written by Rajinder Krishan. C Ramchandra is the music director.
