Dekh hamen aawaaz na denaa

September 28, 2010 8:58 am

I thought that I had already posted this song. But when I looked at the farmaishes of the readers then I realised that I had yet to post this song.

This song is a duet from “Amar Deep”(1958). It is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and C Ramchandra is the music director.

This is a memorable song that is remembered even today. this song is picturised on Dev Anand and Vyjyanti Mala.

This song in fact has two versions. Now I have included lyrics of the second version too which gets played towards the end of the movie. Lyrics of this version have been provided by Mr Sadanand Kamath.

  1. There is one more Asha-Rafi version of the same song with two different stanzas. I will not like to call them ‘happy’ or ‘sad’ versions but they are two versions of the same tune and have been picturised in different situations on the same lead actors.

The first version of the song was picturised on the lead actors at the first half of the film in good times. The second version was picturised on the lead actors when Vyjayntimala tries successfully to bring Dev Anand out from amnesia towards the end of the film.

Lyrics of the second version :

    dekh hamen aawaaz naa denaa
    o bedard zamaane
    o bedard zamaane
    aaj chale hum
    chhod kar tujhko
    duniyaa nayi basaane
    o bedard zamaane

    yaad karo wo bheegi raaten
    aa aa aa
    yaad karo wo bheegi raaten
    o barsaaten
hoti thhi jab bhor baye tak
    pyaar ki baaten
hoti thhi jab bhor baye tak
    pyaar ki baaten
    itni jaldi bhool gaye tum
    itni jaldi bhool gaye tum
    kyon wo raag puraane
    o bedard zamaane
    dekh hamen aawaaz naa dena
    o bedard zamaane
    o bedard zamaane

    saath wahi hai wahi sitaaraa
    kitnaa pyaaraa
    saath wahi hai wahi sitaaraa
    kitnaa pyaaraa
yehin huwaa thha pehale pehale pyaar hamaara
yehin huwaa thha pehale pehale pyaar hamaara
    aaj milen hum usi tikaane
    aaj milen hum usi tikaane
    phir taqdeer jagaane
    o bedard zamaane
    dekh hamen aawaaz naa dena
    o bedard zamaane
    o bedard zamaane
aaj chale hum chhod kar tujhko
    duniyaa nayi basaane

  2. Pleasant surprprise to have a song Rafi under C Ramchandra, as he was never his favorite singer like Anil Biswas. Pity them.

    1. Anam ji,
I am surprised that according to you’Rafi was never his fav singer’
The facts say otherwise. When Rafi was a newcomer in the early 40s,it was C.Ramchandra who gave him all his support and songs.
Rafi has sung in CR’s,Sagai,Safar, baarish, khidki, patanga,Sajan, bachhon ka khel,Duniya,Shadi se pehle,Sakhee,Nausherwane Adil,Amardeep,Kal hamara hai,Paigham,Rootha na karo,Albela, lootera, nadiya ke pasr,Sargam and many more films.
      In all,Rafi sang 77 songs for C.Ramchandra, 23 solos,39 duets and 15 mixed songs.
In Filmistan’s SAAJAN-47 a song-‘O babu, aji babu’ was to be sung by Ashok kumar, the Hero of the film.CR kept the recording intentionally on the day when the communal riots were taking place, knowing full well that Ashok kumar, being what he was, would not dare to come out that day.he had already arranged Rafi to be present there. When Ashok kumar did not turn up,S.Mukherji allowed Rafi to sing the song. This actually brought up the end of Ashok kumar’s singing career as he rarely sang after that.

note-however it is true that Rafi and CR relations got strained due to a famous lady singer, but it was for a short time only.

  3. Deshmukhji, thanks for the clarification. I was under the wrong impression. However am i right about Anil Biswas, who openly degraded Rafi Sahab.

And secondly what is the lady singer story?

    1. Anam ji,
Both Salil Chaudhary and Anil Biswas were not happy with Rafi.Salilda had once said that he required 30 retakes for Madhumati song’Toote hue khwabon ne ‘ from Rafi.
Anil Biswas had openly opined’ Rafi’s voice is streetsinger’s voice, not suitable for classy music’
In the period 1950 to 1970, both Lata and Rafi had practically become indespensable for every composer.so even Anil biswas also used Rafi in his songs, albeit very few songs.
Rafi first sang for AB in 1950 film ‘Beqasoor’ a mixed song with mukesh,Durrani and chorus.
Then in 1956 he sang in HEER and PAISA HI PAISA and in 1957 film ABHIMAN.
When Rafi and Lata stopped singing together, due to a dispute about Singer’s royalty(about which lot of info is available on internet),CR had also stopped using Rafi briefly.Later things were normal, but anyway CR was on the wane in the industry.

  4. IMHO Rafi had patronage of big MDs of that time like Naushad, S.J, O.P.Nayyar, etc, if Kishore had such backing he would have ruled music of that era.
