Mauj khaamosh hai…jaake laage nainaa

In Hindi movies, love songs are arguably the most frequent form of songs that one comes across.Even among love songs there are so many varieties. “Missing the beloved” is one of these varieties. This opens up the opportunity for creating a song sung by the person missing the beloved. Job of the lyricists to come up with lyrics for such situations must be quite a challenge, seeing that such situations arise in every movie. To the credit of the lyricists of those days, they invariably managed to come up with original songs/ concepts to describe the feelings of the actors.
Here is one such song from “Shama Parwaana” (1954). Here “Shama” (Suraiyya) is missing “Parwaana” (Shammi Kapoor) and she sings this sad song from her room, while a few other ladies assembled near a river to fetch water sing and dance. Their song discusses the feeling of missing the beloved by describing how such a lady behaves on the bank of the river.”She who is missing her beloved, loses her sleep and peace of mind and she spends her entire day and night by the bank of the river”- this is how they describe the state of mind of a lady in love.
This song is sung by Suraiyya and Asha Bhonsle. This was the first time that Asha Bhonsle, then a rising and struggling singer got to sing with Suraiyya, an established superstar of the time. Asha Bhonsle does not recall her association with Suraiyya with any fondness. She found Suraiyya’s behaviour towards her too patronising, as she reminisced many decades later.
The lyrics are written superbly by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music of Husnlal Bhagatram is outstanding.
Here is this wonderful song from “Shama Parwaana” (1954) which I heard/ watched for the first time just a few hours ago.
Song-Mauj khaamosh hai …jaake laage nainaa(Shama Parwaanaa) (1954) Singer-Suraiyya, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics
mauj khaamosh hai
bahtaa huaa dhaaraa thahraa
subah se shaam huyi
dil na hamaaraa thahraa
aaa aaa
aaa aaa
aaa aaa
aaa aaa
o o
jaake laage nainaa
wo paaye nahin chainaa
nadiyaa kinaare wo
guzaare din-rainaa
aaaa aaaa
aaaa aaaa
o
jaake laage nainaa
wo paaye nahin chainaa
nadiyaa kinaare wo
guzaare din-rainaa
saans jo aaye dil ko dukhaaye
koyi aise jeene ko kahaan se jigar laaye
o
jaake laage nainaa
wo paaye nahin chainaa
nadiyaa kinaare wo
guzaare din-rainaa
gin-gin lahren bitaaye din-ratiyaan
gin-gin lahren bitaaye din-ratiyaan
jaise-jaise nadi bahe
waise bahen ankhiyaan
jaise-jaise nadi bahe
waise bahen ankhiyaan
aas jo aaye toofaan uthaaye
koyi aise jeene ko kahaan se jigar laaye
o
jaake laage nainaa
wo paaye nahin chainaa
nadiyaa kinaare wo
guzaare din-rainaa
piyaa se milan ko
kinaare khade tarse
piyaa se milan ko
kinaare khade tarse
kachhu na bataaye gori
duniyaa ke dar se
kachhu na bataaye gori
duniyaa ke dar se
aankh jhukaaye dard chhupaaye
koyi aise jeene ko kahaan se jigar laaye
o
jaake laage nainaa
wo paaye nahin chainaa
nadiyaa kinaare wo
guzaare din-rainaa
o
jaake laage nainaa
wo paaye nahin chainaa
nadiyaa kinaare wo
guzaare din-rainaa

[…] Suraiyya was already a star (in singing as well as acting) when Lata was struggling to find a foothold in Hindi movie playback singing. When she established herself in late 1940s, she soon became the number one and never looked back since. Lata and Suraiyya have sang together in only four songs. Likewise Asha Bhonsle and Suraiyya have sung together only once. I have already discussed the one song were Asha Bhonsle and Suraiyya sang together. This song is Mauj khaamosh hai…jaake laage nainaa (Shama Parwaana) […]

Yes.you are right.
Asha bhonsle doesn’t remember her with fondness.
This was the only ‘one’ song they sang together.
Husanlal-Bhagatram’s work in their twilight years was best for this movie.
To cite ” Bekraar hai koi aaaaaa mere dildaar aa” which you have already posted is super melodies tune.
