Kaise deewaali manaayen ham laala

“Deepawali” also called “Deewaali” means festival of lights in Hindi. There is another similar sounding unrelated word in Hindi called “deewaala” which means bankruptcy, which is nearly an antonym of deewaali. This word play of deewaali and deewaala is often used in common conversation by people.
Not just common conversation, this word play finds place in Hindi movie songs as well, especially those picturised on comedians.
Here is a song from “Paighaam” (1959), where Johny Walker wonders how to celebrate “deewaali” when he is perennially broke the year round.
This song is sung by Rafi. The lyrics are by Pradeep, and Pradeep has come up with street smart words in this song, which are normally not associated with him.
C Ramchandra is the music director.
On the occasion of Deewaali, here is this song from “Paighaam” (1959). Here is hoping a “deewaala” free “deewaali” and a prosperous new year to the readers of this blog.

Lyrics
kaise deewaali manaayen ham laalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
ham to huye dekho than than gopaalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
mar-mar ke ham roz mehnat karen
arre yaaron ko dekho tijori bharen
din-raat ham to ghulaami karen
arre phokat mein
phokat mein ye saand kheti charen
dhan pe hamaare hai sethon ka taalaa
apna to baarah maheene deewaala
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
kaise deewaali manaayen ham laalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
ham khud to khichdi hi khaate rahe
arre halwaa lafange udaate rahe
ham muft jhhaadoo lagaate rahe
Gangaa mein
arre Gangaa mein gadhe nahaate rahe
daataa teri akl ku
haan
daataa teri akl ku le jaayen jhaalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
kaise deewaali manaayen ham laalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaalaa
apnaa to baarah maheene deewaala
