“Love in Shimla” (1960) was the debut movie of Joy Mukherji and Sadhana. And one must say that the two of them made an impressive debut.
Music of this movie certainly helped. Few people may today remember the movie, but the songs of this movie are remembered even today.
I have discussed three songs from this movie in the past. Here is another song from this movie.
This song is one that can be called a question-answer song. Rafi (singing for Joy Mukherji) asks questions like “whose cheeks are pink,whose arms are long etc etc and pat come the reply from the chorus- “Shakeela, Jameela, Leela, Sheela, Tequila, etc.
I am not much knowledgeable about western music, but I think that this song is influenced by some western tune. I recall listening to a western tune during my younger days which had some nice music and very less lyrics. The only lyrics that it contained was “Tequila”. This song could well be inspired by that song. Or I may be totally wrong in my guess.
As is always the case, the indian adaptation of western tunes always makes for interesting listening. The lyrics by Rajinder Kumar are interesting. Iqbal Qureshi is the music director.
