Jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayin ankhiyaan

Here is a forgotten gem from a forgotten movie.
This song is from “Anuradha” (1960) which had Balraj Sahni and Leela Naidu in lead roles.
This wonderful song is written by Shailendra and it is sung by Lata. Music is composed by Ravishankar who later on went on to make his name in the west as a Sitar Maestro.
The song is picturised on Leela Naidu and Balraj Sahni. When I was growing up as a teenager in 1970s, I used to read in magazines (accompanied by photographs of a grey haired Leela Naidu) that Leela Naidu was regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world. I used to wonder how. After watching a young Leela Naidu in this movie, on can see that she was indeed easy on the eyes.
Of course one needs more than just beauty to make it big in any field. I do not know why she could not make it big in Hindi movies. Though it must be said that she grew old gracefully in the 1970s and 1980s and one would often see her photographs in magazines.
Here is this lovely semi classical song from “Anuradha” (1960) which is based on Raag Tilak Kaamod.

Song-Jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayin ankhiyaan (Anuradha) (1960) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Ravishankar
Lyrics
jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayin ankhiyaan
main to hoon jaagi mori so gayin ankhiyaan
jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayin ankhiyaan
main to hoon jaagi mori so gayin ankhiyaan
ajab deewaani bhayi, mose anjaani bhayi
ajab deewaani bhayi, mose anjaani bhayi
pal mein paraayi dekho ho gayin ankhiyaan
main to hoon jaagi mori so gayin ankhiyaan
jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayin ankhiyaan
main to hoon jaagi mori so gayin ankhiyaan
man ujiyaaraa chhaayaa, jag ujiyaaraa chhaayaa
man ujiyaaraa chhaayaa, jag ujiyaaraa chhaayaa
jagmag deep sanjo gayi ankhiyaan
main to hoon jaagi mori so gayin ankhiyaan
jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayin ankhiyaan
main to hoon jaagi mori so gayin ankhiyaan
koi man bhaa gayaa
jaadu wo chala gayaa
koi man bhaa gayaa
jaadu wo chala gayaa
man ke do motiyaan
piro gayi ankhiyaan
jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayin ankhiyaan
main to hoon jaagi mori so gayin ankhiyaan
jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayin ankhiyaan
main to hoon jaagi mori so gayin ankhiyaan

This movie had some really good songs, and I am kicking myself for not remembering this song all these days! Leela Naidu was a very attractive person, and I remember hearing my mother and aunt discussing her good looks, but I think she didn’t hit it big because her accent, apparently, was atrocious. I also vaguely remembering reading somewhere that she was half French, so maybe that was why her accent was not good.

such a beautiful song
is like a drop of dew
in the young and growing mind
who has just learnt to swim
in the blue ocean of times !!!

It one of the rare songs rendered by beloved Lataji. It is a unique combination.Perhaps This is the only movie for which PT.Ravishankar composed music/songs.
