It is interesting to know how the information that is common knowledge four decades back becomes rare information with passage of time. Today few people know about the existence of this movie and its songs. When I was growing up as a pre teen kid in late 1960s and early 1970s, information about this movie was readily available but I never bothered to look that up. after all I was a pre teen kid, who was only interested in the new songs and new movies, not old ones like this.
Now if one seeks to know about this movie, one draws a blank if one does a search on internet. It shows that not all information is available on internet. In case of information pertaining to Hindi movies and their songs, I suspect that only a small portion of the entire body of information is available on internet.
Therefore, every scrap of new information that one can acquire about old movies is like golden dust. In my quest of seeking valuable information about old movies and their songs, I get the assistance of many readers who kindly share information which otherwise is difficult to find.
Sudhir is one of those knowledgeable readers who quite frequently comes to my rescue when I need to identify some old actress or the lyricists of some old movies. And now he has begun to send me information about some rare songs as well.
Here is a rare song from “Bilwamangal” (1954). This movie was made on the life of Surdas and the title role of Surdas was played by C H Atma, who like Surdas was visually impaired himself.
This movie also had Suraiyya in it and she sang some nice songs in this movie. I have discussed one such song in these pages. Here is another song from this movie. This difficult to find song is written by D N Madhok. Music is composed by Bulo C Rani.
Here is this lovely song from “Bilwamangal” (1954). Listening to this song is a pleasing experience for the senses.
Song-Parwaanon se preet seekh len (Bilwamangal) (1954) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Bulo C Rani
Lyrics
parwaanon se preet seekh len
shama se seekhen jal jaana
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa
tera mera afsaanaa
parwaanon se preet seekh len
shama se seekhen jal jaana
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa
shabnam se ham seekhenge
fariyaad na karnaa ro lenaa
fariyaad na karnaa ro lenaa
phoolon se seekhenge ham
kaanton ki nok par muskaanaa
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa
tera meraa afsaanaa
parwaanon se preet seekh len
shama se seekhen jal jaana
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa
bulbul bankar janam janam
main teri khoj mein gaaungi
main teri khoj mein gaaungi
yahi aas hai lekar jeena
issi aas mein mar jaanaa
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa
tera mere afsaanaa
parwaanon se preet seekh len
shama se seekhen jal jaana
phir duniya ko yaad rahegaa

Sudhirji,
I am surprised to see that I am the 1st one to write the comment. I had listened to Talat Mahmood & Suraiyya’s songs at very young age on Radio Vividhbhaarti. But back then we had to be satisfied with whatever they could broadcast. And also, because of the age, could not understand few words. Lekin yeh dono gaayakon ki aawaaz itni achhi lagati thi ki jee karta tha sunte hi jaao. These two singers had a “kashish” in their voice and whenever they both got chance to sing duets together, they have surpassed all expectations of their music lovers. Songs from Mirza Ghalib proves that. Thank you for posting this song. I could never get the 1st two lines of this song completely. Now, if not sing, I can atleast hum this song 🙂

Sudhirji,
In the second line, I could hear the word “sheekh len” instead of “sheekhen. So, it would be
parwaanon se preet seekh len
shamma se seekh len jal jaana
Just my guess, as it means/fits better with the tune.
