When I had begun this blog, my grand vision was to discuss 2500 songs. I had thought that by that time I would have discussed all the Hindi movie songs that are worth discussing. When I finally reached that magic figure (on 29 may 2010), I found that I had just scratched the surface, as far as discussing the great Hindi movie songs was concerned and that many great songs were not yet discussed.
Now, 1000 songs later, I feel just the same. 1000 songs later, did I say ? Yes I did. In other words, this blog is now 3500 songs old. Yes, 3500 of the choiciest songs, mostly from the golden era of Hindi movie songs have now been posted in this blog.
Chosing the 3500th for the blog was not easy. There were many strong contenders and there were in fact other songs that I have been holding on to for such similar special occasions.
Many of my century marking songs have been great but lesser known songs. That is not the case with this song. This song has always been a well known song. Ironically this song never figured among the top songs in the Binaca geetmala annual programmes during its heydays. The reason could be that this song came in an era of great songs and this song got elbowed out in popularity stakes by the other great songs of that era.
This song wears many hats. This song is the title song since the movie title “Jhumroo” figures repeatedly in the lyrics. The song is a theme song because the song describes Jhumroo’s philosophy towards life in this song.
That is not all. When I watched the picturisation of this song, I realised that the movie opens with this song. That way, this song is the movie opening song. In addition, this song is picturised on a train. That makes it a rail song as well.
This song is picturised on the Darjeeling Hill toy train, and this picturisation predates the “Aradhana” rail song on Darjeeling Hill Railway by one whole decade. The picturisation shows a toy train winding its way on the picturesque terrain of Darjeeling hills while this song gets played in the background. Madhubala is one of the passengers travelling in this train.
Coming to the song, What a song it is ! Kishore Kumar is at his absolute best as a singer in this song. This song has Kishore Kumar at his yodelling best. Just like the song wears many hats (categorywise), Kishore Kumar himself wore many hats in this movie and this song. He was not only the singer and the actor in this movie, he was also the music director. He also wrote the story of this movie. And in case of this song, he was the lyricist as well !
In reality , he was also the producer of this movie but for tax purposes he would give the name of his manager Anoop Sharma as the producer of his movies. Legend has it that Anoop Sharma rolled in the moolah as the official producer of Kishore Kumar’s movies, especially from the most successful of them all, viz “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958).
This is one song that has the effect of cheering up the listeners. And in case one is watching the picturisation as well, then the effect gets enhances even more.
Here is this awesome song from “Jhumroo”(1961), which is sung by Kishore Kumar. Majrooh SultanpuriKishore Kumar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kishore Kumar. In brief, this song is a one man show. 🙂

Yes, I am sure that this blog, like this “Jhumru” song will continue to go on and on on its merry ways, adding more and more songs as days pass. As can be seen from the list of pending farmaishes, we still have lots and lots of songs to cover. We have already made good headway, and I am sure it is just a matter of time when we will be able to have almost all the great songs of Hindi movies in this blog. Till that elusive target is met, hopefully this musical journey will continue to roll on and on.

congrats for post Number 3500.
this song is an absolute family favourite; my dad having introduced it to me as a kid (he cud sing it with the exact yodelling that Kishore Kumar did{my he ve his place in heaven}) and like a good mother i ve passed the craze for this song to my son and daughter, my daughter will sing it to the accompaning yodelling by me and my son. so thank you wholeheartedly for this song
but unfortunately i am unable to hear it, seems to be a speaker problem

Hearty congrats, Atul, for the 3500th song!!!
I’ve travelled this journey with you all the way from song #1 and it feels great to be here at #3500. It has been an absolute pleasure all this while.
If I may draw an analogy, I see each song as a railway station in India (the more famous songs are like “junctions”, the less-known ones are the small stations). But as you pass each station, you see just that little bit more of India much like you get a little bit more of a glimpse into the rich legacy of Hindi songs everyday by coming onto your blog and seeing the latest “stations”.
May this go on and on, since there are (like you keep saying) still plenty of lovely songs out there still to be showcased on your
blog. And I actually think this is a good thing – not only does it reflect on how rich a legacy there is out there, but it also keeps all of us active every day looking for new songs to listen to out here. 🙂
On this occasion, here’s a spur-of-the moment pathetic attempt at a shair from me (and speaking for all your fans, I hope):

Wah, wah! Kya shairi from Raja! And what a historic milestone, Atul! Congratulations!
I have always loved this song and the energy and infectious enthusiasm in it. It brings a smile to my lips each time I hear it or sing it to myself (since others get tired of my habit of singing the same song to myself for hours on end!).
May this blog never cease to grow, and may its followers also grow at the same pace!

Many congratulations on reaching the milestone.
I wish before the next hundred, u give place to the treat compostions of mandan mohan, and SD Burman’s like Abhimaan, Hanste Zakhm, Tere Gahr ke saamne, heer ranzha, and one of the missing song from Mughle -e – Azam, – “Ae Ishq yeh sab duniya wale”. I have many more farmaishes, mostly those songs/lyrics are in my memory also. How do i help u in this massive endeavour of your. kindly guide.

To the best of my knowledge, Madan Mohan composed around 700 Hindi movie songs in 92 Hindi movies and S D Burman composed around 650 Hindi movie songs in 90 movies. I have so far discussed 166 Madan Mohan compositions from 69 movies and 227 S D Burman compositions from 69 movies. In other words, about 1/4th of All Madan Mohan compositions and about 1/3rd of all S D Burman compositions have already been covered. Most of their movies (including some really obscure ones) have already been represented.
Likewise 1/4h of all the compositions of Naushad have already been covered. Same is the case with many other composers, lyricists and singers.
I have done that in two years and a half.
It is a matter of time when I will be able to cover the missing songs, provided they are available.
One can of course help in many ways, viz by providing missing information about songs/movies/actors discussed in the blog, by pointing out songs that are not yet posted, by providing links/ lyrics of songs, by writing guest posts (there have been three such guest posters so far) etc etc.

Greetings and conratulations on reaching the 3,500th milestone in this wonderful journey. I am sure we still have many more thousand songs to go :-). As you rightly say, we have just scratched the surface. There are thousands of more movies that are still to be explored, and many many more gems to be discovered.
