This date ten years ago (viz 4 August 2012) saw as many as eight songs from eight different movies getting covered in the blog.

One can notice that six movies (out of eight) whose songs were covered on this date ten years ago on 4 august 2012 have since been YIPPEED. That leaves us with two movies that are eligible for Blog Ten YEar Challenge today on 4 August 2022.

We also notice that all the eight songs featured the voice of Kishore Kumar. That was to mark the occasion of Kishore Kumar’s birth anniversary which falls of this day. This gives us an idea how prolific this blog used to be ten years ago, when six and more songs used to get covered in the blog with ease.

“Door Ka Raahi”(1971) is one movie that is eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today. This movie was produced and directed by Kishore Kumar. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Tanuja, Abhi Bhattacharya, Ganga, Amit Kumar, Bambi, Hiralal, Yograj, Iftikhar, Padma Khanna, Shivraj, Asit Sen, Keshto, Radheshyam, Gautam Mukherji, Ratan Gaurang, Abhay Shah,Baby Deepa aka Rajni Sharma, Kishore Kumar, Moni Chatterjee, Sameer Kumar etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it. Six songs from the movie have been covered so far.

Here is the seventh song from ‘Door Ka Raahi’ (1971) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Though HFGK is silent about the lyricist, the record label mentions A Irshad as the lyricist. Music is composed by Kishore Kumar.

Only audio of the song is available. It is almost certain that the song was picturised on Kishore Kumar himself in case this song was picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Today’s song is from film 102 Not Out-2018.

Readers who identify me as a writer on old films, may be shocked, as I am about to write on a New Era song, as new as not even 1 year old ! But honestly, when I accidentally bumped into this song’s credit, which said that Amitabh Bachhan was the Music Composer of this song, I was myself surprised. Out of curiosity, I found out that song on You Tube and heard/saw it. Frankly, I was not only impressed but even I liked the song. Of course, much of the liking came from seeing the wonderful video of the song- which is just superb !

Amitabh Bachhan (AB for short please) is my favourite actor. I have been seeing many films since late 40s up to the end of the year 1963 – when I began my career in Pharma Marketing. In the beginning of 1971, I heard about film Anand-71, whose songs had already mesmerised me. I went to see the film. More than Rajesh Khanna, I was bowled over by the acting of the lanky New comer (it was AB’s just 7th film) – Amitabh Bachhan. Next I saw him when I was travelling in Goa, where I saw his film Bombay to Goa-72. This was a remake of Tamil film ” Madras to Pondecherry”-66. (Remakes were made in Marathi and Kannada also.) By now, AB had taken over my senses completely and I started seeing his films-but selectively.

Zanjeer-73 (15th film) made him a star. I enjoyed his films like Sholay-75, Deewar-75, Chupke Chupke-75, Amar Akbar and Anthony-77, Trishul-78, Don-78, Satte pe Satta-82 and Coolie-83. In early 80s, I stopped seeing films in Theatres or on TV, due to my job. After that till today, I have not visited a Theatre. I do not know how a Multiplex looks like from inside. I am not proud of this, but it underlines a fact that I had lost interest in seeing the New age films and that I had low level patience. Sometimes I saw films on VCP and later Video player. The last film of Amitabh I saw was Baadbaan-2003. My most favourite film of Amitabh is Trishul-78. I had even bought its Video cassette that time.

Amitabh Harivansh Bachchan, best known as Amitabh Bachchan, was born in Allahabad, India on October 11, 1942. India was still a British colony at the time, and would not achieve independence until five years later. Bachchan’s father was the renowned Hindi poet Dr. Harivansh Rai. His mother, Teji Bachchan, was a Sikh socialite. He has one younger brother, named Ajitabh.

Bachchan went to Sherwood College boarding school before enrolling in Delhi University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. Once he graduated, he became a freight broker in Calcutta. After a few years in Calcutta, Bachchan was ready for a change. He decided to move to Bombay and take a stab at Bollywood show business. By this time, India had been independent for nearly two decades, and Hindi cinema was thriving.

In 1969, Bachchan made his film debut in Saat Hindustani. Although the movie tanked at the box office, Bachchan still managed to capture the attention of directors. Soon enough, the offers started rolling in.

By the early 1970s, Bachchan had garnered popularity with audiences as the “angry young man” in a series of successful Hindi feature films. His starring role in Zanjeer was particularly instrumental in launching him to stardom as an action-movie hero. Bachchan’s performances in films like Laawaris, Coolie, Naseeb, Silsila, Shaarabi and Jaadugar continued to enamor fans of the tall and handsome action hero, and also landed him multiple Fanfare Awards. From the 1970s through the early 1980s, the swashbuckling Bachchan appeared in more than 100 films. He seized opportunities to work with India’s most acclaimed directors, such as Prakash Mehra, and dominated the silver screen with films like Trishul, Sholay and Chashme Buddoor. In addition to acting, Bachchan’s roles often required him to sing.

In 1982, Bachchan had a serious accident while filming. Fans prayed for his recovery. Bachchan survived the accident, but it prompted him to change career paths. In 1984, he traded his Bollywood stardom for a seat in the Indian Parliament. His political aspirations proved to be short-lived; in 1987, he left his seat due to unexpected controversy.

By the 1990s, the limelight surrounding Bachchan had begun to fade. But his decision to start his own entertainment production company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited, and make himself CEO, put him back in the headlines. Bachchan followed his true calling and returned to the silver screen in 1997 with the film Mrityudaata, produced by ABCL. In 2000, he also started hosting the Indian version of the television game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. Despite a few box-office failures in the 1990s, in the 2000s, Bachchan climbed his way back up to stardom as a film actor, earning additional Filmfare and International Film Award nominations for his work on films like Baghban (2003), Khakee (2004) and Paa (2009).

Bachchan married movie actress Jaya Bhaduri in 1973. The couple have two children, a daughter and a son. Their daughter, Shweta Bachchan Nanda, is married to industrialist Nikhil Nanda, whose grandfather was the film director Raj Kapoor. Bachchan and Bhaduri’s son, Abhishek Bachchan, is also an actor and is married to actress Aishwarya Rai.

In addition to being a father and an actor, Bachchan devotes his time to charitable causes. In 2003 he was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). He has won several awards and recently the Dadasaheb Phalke award too. (biography.com).

In my recent post, I had done the analysis of Ashok Kumar’s work pattern. In that article, I had said that may be AB would overtake Ashok kumar’s statistics and the pattern. This was because both of them had a long career period – 61 years for AK and 50 years for AB, and both commanded market demand in their old age, long after their prime times in films. Today, let us see how AB fares….

From 1981 to 2000 (20 years) he acted only in 63 films. In 1982 he met with a serious accident during shooting of Coolie film. Then in 1984, he joined Politics and became an M.P., He quit politics in 1987 and rejoined films. But by 1990, his limelight started fading and films were hard to come by. He formed his own company Amitaqbh Bachhan Corporation Limited (ABCL). In the year 2000, his fortune took a turn. He was selected to conduct a game show on TV- Kaun Banega Karodpati. This proved to be an extraordinary successful venture and his popularity soared. This also reflected in his films From 20 films in the decade of 1991 to 2000, he shot to 58 films in 2001 to 2010 period.

He remains one of the most respected actor in the film industry and is in full demand for films. AB has so far acted in 232 films. He has sung 64 songs in 44 films – though none of his songs have become a craze or popular. His first song came in film Kabhie Kabhie-76 and latest song is for film Badla-2019. I feel his golden period was when he worked with Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He was also benefited when he worked with 15 Screenplays and stories by Salim-Javed. it would have been 17 films, but he refused Hasth ki safai-74 and Mr.India-87 – both films were Box office Hits. Another thing. I read on Internet about his 1969 film ” Ek tha Chander, Ek thi Sudha ” starring AB, Jaya and Rekha. Was there any such film ? If anybody knows anything, please let me know. There is no mention of this film anywhere else.

Today morning (19th), I read in news that AB was admitted in Nanavati Hospital since 15th October for a Liver problem. Luckily, while I am typing this post,I learnt that he has been discharged in the morning only. I wish him good health and like this film’s title let him be 102 Not Out !!!

The film was directed by Umesh Shukla. It was based on a Gujarati story by Soumya Joshi. His next 3 films are ready for release in 2020 – Gulabo-Sitabo, Chehre and Bramhastra. This film had 6 songs. 3 were composed by Salim Suleimani, 1 each was composed by Amitabh Bachhan, Hiralal Bramhabhatt and Rohan Vinayak. The lyrics were by Amitabh Bhattacharya, who has written 308 songs in 82 films. He sang 31 songs in 18 films also. The film was released on 4-5-2018 and earned Rs 102 crores for an investment of Rs. 35 crores only. The story of the film, as per wiki, is….

Dattatraya Vakharia (Amitabh Bachchan) is a 102-year-old who enjoys life in jovial ways. Babulal Vakharia (Rishi Kapoor), his 76-year-old son, is the opposite, and believes that he is now too old to enjoy life, and detests how his father acts. Dhiru (Jimit Trivedi) is an employee at a medical shop who delivers medicine to the Vakharias. Dhiru likes Dattatraya for his attitude and is scared of Babulal because of his grumpy nature.

Dattatraya seeks to break the record of the oldest living person. and thus he seeks to avoid negative people. Therefore, he threatens to send his son to a elderly care facility unless he achieves certain conditions. While Babulal is hesitant, he accepts with Dhiru as a witness. Firstly, Babulal writes a love letter to his deceased wife. Next, he accuses his doctor of being a thief so that he stops going to the clinic daily for a checkup. While rejecting to cut holes in his childhood blanket, Babulal visits a playground and a church that remind him of childhood memories. He becomes sorrowed and distributes cake to young children in the streets with his father.

Babulal begins to appreciate his father’s outlook on life. However, Babulal receives a call from his estranged son Amol informing Babulal that he will visit India. While Babulal is ecstatic hearing the news, Dattatraya is certain that Amol’s motive is to claim their property as their heir. So he gives Babu his last task: to kick Amol out of the house for all his negligence towards his family. They argue and Babulal stops talking to Dattatraya. Even Dhiru, for the first time, supports Babulal and feels that Amol should be given a chance. Dattatraya reveals that Babu had spent all his savings to educate Amol and send him to the United States. However, Amol ignored them, telling nothing about his new family life in America. Dattatraya also tells his son he has cancer, living happily so that Babulal can live like him.

Days later, Amol arrives in India, where Babulal humiliates him in public, calling him to return home. Dattatraya passes away at 102 years of age. Babulal finds a recording of his father predicting that the record of the oldest man will be broken by Babulal himself.

When you will see this video song,I am sure you too will like it. With this song, film 102 Not out and AB as a Music Director make a Debut on the Blog.

This song reiterates, what I always say,” Not all that was made before 70 was good,same as, Not all that is made after 70s is bad”. There is always some good everywhere !

Hindi Songs in Marathi Films : 2

Today’s song is from a Marathi film- Dhananjay-66. This is a Hindi song, sung by Chitalkar, under his own baton ! Lyrics are by P L Santoshi. The film was based on a story by Marathi’s renowned Detective Novelist of yesteryear – Baburao Arnalkar.

In the early 50s,when I was about 10-11 years old, I first read a Marathi detective novel written by Baburao Arnalkar. In those days, reading such stuff was a no-no for children, and so I had to read it, sitting in some lonely corner, keeping one eye and one ear for checking if anybody is seeing me. I was simply thrilled by reading this book and then started the marathon reading of detective novels- of course chori chori ! Happily I found some of my friends also doing the same thing and even my elder brother was seen reading these books.

Shortly, this became an open programme and I joined a local book library, catering to such books. Every month such 10 books used to come there and all these books were written by one author- Baburao Arnalkar. We always wondered how can any one man write so many books, so varied and entertaining every month. As the time went by, the author wrote in a magazine, how he was impressed by novels of Edgar Wallace, Berkeley grey, Roderick Graeme, Peter Cheyney, Sax Rohmer and few others. He decided to adapt their stories to Indian environment, culture and customs, so that Marathi readers felt affinity for them. Certain books, however, were just not possible to adapt lest they lost their charm and such books were presented just in a translated form, with same name and places to maintain reality.

Baburao’s main character, on whom he wrote more books was Dhananjay ( he got this name from Bhagwadgeeta) – a private detective with a sharp intelligence, fearlessness, a high degree of common sense and an ability to use logic rightly. This character seemed to be a combination of Perry Mason (Earl Stanley Gardener), Hercule Poirot (Agatha Christie) and Sherlock Holmes (Arthur Connon Doyle).

Baburao also brought into Marathi the dashing ” Normon Conquest ” of author Berkeley Grey as Zunjar (झुंजार) along with his wife Joy (Vijaya) and the faithful assistant Biji (Netaji). Novels of Zunjar were particularly more popular because he was flamboyant, adventurous and of humorous nature with a speciality of getting his commission from every villain,before Police arrested him. He was one who would not hesitate to cross legal boundaries in order to book the villains in the final chapter. Zunjar’s Guru Bhimsen and successor Golandaz also had many books on them.

The other popular character Baburao Arnalkar brought was Roderick Graeme’s famous “Black Shirt”. In Marathi he became Kalapahad(काळापहाड)- a successful Novelist by day and a daring adventurer by night. Baburao brought stories of Peter Cheyney and Ellery Queen. Brett Haliday’s Mike Shane became Jayant in Marathi. Carter Brown’s private detective was Sanjay in Marathi. Additionally he created from Edgar Wallace, Kodand rao- Public Prosecutor (J.G.Reader), Major(Retd.) Sudarshan- a private investigator and C.I.D. Inspector Murar Rao.

Shifting from the usual, Baburao brought Jungle stories of British Settlements in Africa by Edgar Wallace, featuring Commissioner Sanders, Capt.Hamilton and funny but brave Lt.Bones. These were brought in original form having English names and places. Similarly, the “Justmen” series by Edgar Wallace featuring George Manfred, Leon Gonsalves and Raymond Poicort – each having different skill and together punishing secretly the difficult to catch criminal, helping the Police. Baburao was too versatile. he brought stories of Sailors, featuring Capt Daryasarang and his assistant Savlaram. The seafaring criminal stories were an entirely different world for Marathi readers.

Baburao also gets credit for introducing the deadly Dr. Fu Manchu, a character created by Sax Rohmer. Fu Manchu is a Chinese scientist who wants to rule the world. An entire generation born in the 40s was mesmerised by Baburao’s detective novels and feasted on the stories of heroes created by British, American and German authors, in the 1920s and 1930s. These novels re-created the pre-war times and entertained people.

Having read Baburao Arnalkar’s books based on foreign authors, I got and read almost every English book that Baburao had translated. Novels by Edgar Wallace and others are still in my library. I had about 200 selected books-Marathi- of Baburao Arnalkar, which I gifted to my niece recently.

Baburao Arnalkar (real name Chandrakant Sakharam Chavan) was born on 9-6-1906 at Arnala in Vasai. He studied only up to 10th, but earned a proficiency in English, as he was an avid reader of books. In the 1942 Freedom struggle, he was jailed for 18 months. In this jail, he got hands on the books of Edgar Wallace. He was so thrilled that he decided to bring these books in Marathi. He had already written his first detective novel ” Queen of Diamonds” (चौकटची राणी) in 1939.

He started an Optical lenses shop in Bombay for earning a living. His writing started from 1946, but in the period 1952 to 1966, he was very prolific, writing 6 to 10 books a month. On completing 500 books,the then Maharashtra Government felicitated him and awarded Rs. 10000 also. He wrote 1042 detective novels, before he put his pen down due to old age. His name was entered in Guinness Book of World Records in those days.

He received several awards and honours from prestigious institutions. However the so called Classic literature writers never conceded Detective Novels as a respected form of literature. This always remained an entertainment for the middle class society who dreamt of super powered heroes. More than this recognition, he valued the love and affection an entire generation poured on him. He not only gave entertaining books but also sustained and developed the reading habit among the youngsters of those times.

Baburao Arnalkar died peacefully on 5-7-1996 at the ripe age of 90 years. He must have been a contented man. My thanks to him, for being a true entertainer.

Film Dhananjay-66, based on Baburao Arnalkar’s story, was produced by C.Ramchandra. After parting ways with Lata, in the late 50s, C.Ramchandra did not do well in Hindi films. He disappeared slowly. He turned to Marathi films and stage shows around the world. He got married second time to Shantabai and had a son and a daughter from this marriage. Most of his time he stayed in his Poona Bungalow. His son and daughter are leading doctors in USA, and are well settled. I do not know if Shantabai is still alive. C.Ramchandra had produced 2 Marathi films. The other film was Gharkul.

C.Ramchandra played the Hero- Dhananajay’s role in this film. After his first flop film Naganand-1935 ( only 9 people in the first show. There was no second show), this was his second film in the Hero’s role. The film did average business. The cast was Chitalkar, Uma, Arun Sarnaik ( he had acted in 2 Hindi films…Subhadra haran-64 and Lady killer-68), Ashalata, Gulab Mokashi, Jaymala , Shakuntala etc etc.

The film was directed by Raja Thakur. Rajaram Dattatreya Thakur was born in 1923 at Ponda in Goa. He did work as an assistant to Master Vinayak and later Raja Paranjape. Raja Thakur had produced an English film ” Birbal – My brother “-1973. His another film “Mumbaicha Jawai” (मुंबईचा जावई)-1970, was remade in Hindi as ‘Piya ka Ghar’-1971 by Basu Chatterjee.

There were 6 songs in the films. 3 songs were in Hindi. 1 song was in Konkani. This song “Hatat bangdi sonyachi, hi pori konachi ( हातात बांगडी सोन्याची, ही पोरी कोनाची ) became an evergreen song, so popular that even now, it is played in Ganesh utsav, Holi etc. programmes. Only 2 songs were in Marathi, in this Marathi film.

Today’s song has a tune, which Chitalkar seems to have borrowed from his own film Aazad-1955 – “Marna bhi muhabbat mein kisi kaam na aaya”. Enjoy today’s song in Chitalkar’s voice.

Today’s song is from a film, which is not only a rare but also an obscure film, about which not much is known. The film is Mera Gaon-1942.

1942 was an important year in the Independence struggle of our country. The historical ” Quit India ” (चले जाव) movement was launched by Gandhiji. He had also appealed to Indians to march towards the villages, where the real India lay, according to his philosophy. Due to unemployment and frequent dry spells in the countryside, the farmers started an influx to the cities leaving their farms. His appeal was towards such people to go back to their villages.

Impressed with Gandhiji’s clarion call, even film makers were eager to make patriotic films and songs. One such patriotic song from film Kismet-43 came under the scan of the British empire and its writer-Kavi Pradeep- had to go underground for some time to avoid arrest. Film Mera Gaon-42 was also one such patriotic film. Though I have not seen this film, I have seen its photos and comments thereon in Film India issues of 1942. A lot can be guessed from it.

The film was made by laxmi productions, Bombay and was directed by a popular and veteran Bangla director Profull Roy. Music was also by a veteran Bangla composer-K C Dey. Bengal’s respected, popular and skilled actress Chhaya Devi also acted in this Hindi film. Prafulla Roy ( Born on 1-1-1892 at Kushtia, Bengal) started his career from silent era by directing 2 silent films. His first talkie film in Hindi was Ramayan-34, made by Bharat Laxmi Pictures, Calcutta.

After New Theatres became well established and made films in Bangla and Hindi competition came up. Calcutta’s New Theatres was like a family. It ran on systems. It became a way of life for people working in it. Since its establishment in 1930, competition increased consistently, in the number of film producing companies in Calcutta. By 1938, there were many Production houses in Calcutta alone. Some of them were- Arora Film Co..,Shri Bharat Laxmi Pictures, Chitramandir RBS Prodn, Dev-Dutt films, East India F.Co., Indua Movietone, Kali Films, Kamala Talkies, Madan Theatres, New Popular Pictures, Moti mahal Theatres, Murli Pictures, Quality Pictures, Radha F.Co., Sonoray Picture Syndicate, Sunrise F.Co., M and S.F.D. Company, and Tollywood studio. ( interesting point is, Bombay film industry came to be known as Bollywood decades after this Calcutta studio-Tollywood- which continued till today for Bangla Film industry). Only few of these were regular film production houses with own facilities. Most others were formed to produce occasional films, using facilities at the regular production houses.

One of the major production house was Bharat Laxmi. Established in 1934 by Babulal Choukhani in Kolkata, Shree Bharat Lakshmi Pictures became a force to reckon with in Bangla cinema and churned out many important productions in the coming two decades. In the very same year, Choukhani sets up Bharat Lakshmi Studio in Tollygunge and gets industry stalwarts like Ahindra Chowdhury, Jahar Ganguly and Dhiraj Bhattacharya to collaborate with him on some major projects of this decade. Prolific, resourceful and immensely enterprising, Shree Bharat Lakshmi Pictures holds a key position in the history of Bangla cinema.

This Bharat Laxmi Pictures had taken Prafull Roy as its director for Bangla and Hindi films. Roy directed 12 films in Hindi. 9 out of them were made in Calcutta, 1 film in Lahore (Prem yatra-37) and 2 in Bombay (Mera Gaon-42 and Phulwari-51). Roy had also acted in 2 New Theatres films, namely Millionaire-36 and Mukti-37.

Chhaya Devi, who was a very well known name in Bangal, came to Bombay for this film, only on the special request of Prafull Roy. Same reason for K C Dey also for this film.

Chhaya Devi – one of the greatest actresses to have ever graced the cinema screen. At a time when women were few in acting, this lady dedicated herself wholeheartedly to the art of cinema and music. Quite less is known of Chhaya Devi about her early life.

Chhaya Devi was born in Bhagalpur in the year 1921 in a very educated and aristocrat family. Her father was Haradhan Gangopadhay. Chhaya Devi was known as “Kanak” in her childhood. Chhaya Devi started her primary education in Mikkhoda Girls School of Bhagalpur. Then her father shifted to Delhi. There she was adimitted in the Indraprastha Girls School. As per her family regulations she was married to Buddhadeb Chattopadhay at the age of only 11. In her early years of marriage, she suffered domestic violence from her husband who was the head master at the Zila School in Ranchi. In an effort to escape the torture and lead a more independent life, She came to Kolkata with her father, when she was a student of tenth standard.

In Kolkata she started taking lessons in music from legendary singer Krishna Chandra Dey. She was introduced to Upen Goswami of East India Film Company by her cousin Suresh Chandra. Suresh Chandra was a theatre enthusiast and a close friend to Upen Goswami. East India Film Company engaged Chhaya Devi for their film “Pather Seshe” in lien of a low remuneration of Rs. 750/-. There after Debaki Basu gave her a chance in “Sonar Sangsar”. This film was released in the year 1936 and it brought fame to Chhaya Devi. She then acted in films like “Rajani”, “Chhinna Haar”, “Pratisodh” and Devika Basu directed Hindi film “Bidyapati”. Suddenly she left film acting and went back to Bhopalpur. There she started taking lessons on classical music from Damodar Mishra. She used to sing Khayal and Thumri from Radio Station. She learnt classical dancing from Shanku Maharaj and Bela Aruab. After few years on request of director Sushil Majumdar and others Chhaya Devi again returned to the film industry. She acted in “Abhayer Biye”. She also sang a few songs in that film.She acted on multi-version (Bengali-Hindi-Tamil) film “Ratnadwip”. Apart from Bengali films she simultaneously acted in many Hindi films in this second phase. Her remarkable films were “Dada Thakur”, “Raja Ram Mohon”, “Arogyo Niketan”, “Sapta Padi”, “Apanjan” etc.

Though Chhaya Devi debuted in Bengali movie Sonar Sansar in 1936, she acquired fame for the outstanding acting in the role of Queen Lakshmi in the movie Bidyapati in 1938.From lead female roles in her early days to character roles in her later years, Chhaya Devi had shown her creative ability in acting. In Atal Jaler Ahwan (1962), she stole the heart of the viewers with her soft and loving acting as mother of Soumitra Chatterjee. In Deya Neya (1963) she acted as the helpless mother of the aspirant singer Prashanta (Uttam Kumar). In the movie Saat Pake Badha (1963) she was the heartless, rude and indifferent mother of Suchitra Sen opposing the affair of her daughter with Soumitra. Chhaya Devi played the role of the mother of Uttam Kumar in many films. In Anthony Firingee (1967), Chhaya Devi was mother of Hensman Antony (Uttam Kumar). Apanjan, an outstanding film directed by Tapan Sinha in 1967, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali, as well as several BFJA Awards, was considered having one of the best of the performances of Chhaya Devi. In Podi Pisir Bormi Bakso (1972), a children’s movie made from a story written by Leela Majumdar and directed by Arundhati Devi, Chhaya Devi played an unforgettable lead comic role of Podi Pisi, the widowed elderly aunt.

Chhaya Devi acted in only 8 Hindi films, namely Vidyapati-37, The Rise-39, Mera Gaon-42, Shri Ramanuj-43. Uttara Abhimanyu-46, Jogi aur Jawani-75, Aalaap-77 and Rang Birangi-83. Chhaya Devi died on 27-4-2001.

The cast of the film was Hansa Wadkar, Chhaya Devi, Jairaj, K C Dey, Majid, Agha, Moti, Kashinath etc. There were 10 songs in the film, all written by Kavi Raghunath Bramhabhatt. Raghunath Brahmbhatt was born on 13-12-1892. He was a famous Gujarati poet and also a popular playwright. He was aptly called ‘Rasakavi’ or ‘Poet of rasa’. He began his career by writing erotic poems that became very popular. His plays mainly tackled mythological and historical subjects, such as Buddhadev i.e. ‘The God Buddha’, Sringi rishi i.e. ‘Mountain Sage’, Ajatsatru, Saraswatichandra, Sneh mudra i.e. ‘Ring of Affection’. He followed Sanskrit dramaturgy i.e. a novelty when Shakespearean adaptations ruled the Gujarati stage. His adaptations of Nanalal Kavi’s verse plays and Govardhanrams novel, Saraswatichandra, were highly appreciated by audiences. He is accepted in literary circles as a major dramatist, a rare recognition for a writer of the old professional theatre. His autobiography Smaran manjari i.e. ‘Cluster of Memories’ in 1955 traces the history of Gujarati theatre over three decades beginning from 1910.

Darpana’s productions of his play Kalyan rajya i.e. ‘Benevolent Kingdom’ in 1962 points to his ability to attract the experimental theatre. Raghunath Brahmbhatt died on 11-7-1983. He wrote lyrics for just 6 Hindi films- Do deewane-36, Baaraat-42, Mera Gaon-42, Ashirwad-43, Bhakta Bilwamangal-48 and Roop sundari-49.

“Door Chalein”(1946), an extremely obscure “social” movie was directed by Phani Majumdar for Durga Pictures Bombay. The movie had Naseem (Jr), Kamal Kapoor, Damyanti Sahni, Balraj Sahni, Rajkumari, Agha, David, K C Dey etc in it.

The movie had at least eight songs, perhaps more. Details of eight songs are available in HFGK.

One song from the movie has been covered in the past. Here is the second song from the movie to appear in the blog. The song is sung by K C Dey and Meena Kapoor. Lyricist is not known. Music is composed by K C Dey.

Only the audio of the song is available. Seeing that K C Dey acted in the movie, it seems clear that he lip synced for himself, but it is difficult to say who lip synced in Meena Kapoor’s voice. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of the song.

PS-Mr Sadanand Kamath has helped fill in the gaps as far as the missing details are concerned. He informs that Sajjan was the lyricist in this movie.
