Songs and dances play a very important role in Hindi movies. In olden days, lead actors were needed to sing and dance. Once playback singing began, actors were thankfully no longer required to sing their own songs, but they were still required to dance. That is especially true for actresses and proficiency in dancing was an important skill for them.
Male actors too were required to dance, though in their case it was not as important as it was for actresses. In fact, quite a few lead actors of the golden era manage to avoid dancing for much of their careers. Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand were the three biggest names among male stars in 1950s and it is rare to see Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand indulging in dancing.
Here is a rare occasion when one finds Raj Kapoor dancing. and he is required to dance a bhangra, no less ! This miracle was performed in “Do Ustaad” (1959),which was a B grade movie produced by shekh Mukhtaar. Now Sheikh Mukhtaar, the original Arnold Schwarznegger kind of actor,was not one to sing and dance himself, so he entrusted this job to the other lead actor of the movie, and as things would have it, the other lead actor of this movie happened to be Raj Kapoor.
This movie had a similar kind of story line that became standard in 1970s in Amitabh Bachchan movies. Sheikh Mukhtaar and Raj Kapoor are brothers, who get separated in childhood, and grow up separately. They unite again towards the end of the movie though their paths cross each other throughout the movie.
Here Raj Kapoor plays himself as well as the character of the younger brother who resembles Raj Kapoor. Madhubala, a star struck girl, falls for the the younger brother, thinking that he is the actor Raj Kapoor. And that is how the two get to sing this song.
