Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Aayiye meharbaan

Posted on: March 7, 2011

My regular visitors may have noticed that these days I tend to discuss several songs of some particular artists and then my preference of artists suddenly undergoes a change. I had discussed the method behind this madness in an earlier post.

As I had explained in that post, these days I am keen to see that the artists who have less than 100 songs in this blog complete their century of songs as early as possible. To enable them to reach this landmark, I consciously start discussing several of their songs every day. And I do that till that artist reaches his century, and then I do what I like doing, viz I post a special song, celebrating that landmark.

That time is here again. Here is this song to celebrate the 100th song of lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi. Now, Qamar Jalalabadi, to many music lovers may not be a particularly well known name, and many people may think that he must be a “boring” shayar who mostly wrote sad/ husn o ishq kind of songs. But nothing could be farther from the truth. In reality, Qamar Jalalabadi was quite a remarkable lyricist who has written songs of all genres, including light hearted songs and western songs.

His real name was Om Prakash Bhandari. He was born on 28 february 1917 in Jalalabad, which is now in Pakistan. Like most lyricists of those days, he has written the usual kinds of songs, but he has also written some unusal songs that we all love so much, without realising that Qamar Jalalabadi has written them. For example, the much loved song Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai(Pahli taarikh) (1954) is written by Qamar Jalalabadi. The light hearted song Dam dam diga diga(Chhaliya)(1959) is also his creation. My personal favourite, the great comedy song Guni jano bhakt jano(Aansoo aur muskaan) is written by Qamar Jalalabadi.

There are many more such examples, but suffice it to say that he is one of the great lyricists of the golden era of Hindi movie music, and it gives me great pleasure to present the 100th song of Qamar Jalalabadi in this blog.

This song is a timeless classic. In fact, I have already discussed another timeless classic from this movie which was also penned by Qamar Jalalabadi. I am talking of the movie “Howrah Bridge” (1958). I have already discussed Mera naam Chin Chin Choo(Howrah Bridge)(1958) in the past, and here is this other great song from this movie.

This song is ofcourse “Aayiye Meharbaan”. This song is sung superbly by Asha Bhonsle and it is performed just as wonderfully by Madhubala. The music of O P Nayyar is outstanding as well.

So, here is this song. enjoy !

hmm hmm hmm hmm
aa ha ha ha ha
aa haa haa haa haa
aayiye meharbaan,
baithiye jaane-jaan
shauq se leejiye jee,
ishq ke imtahaan
aayiye meharbaan,
baithiye jaane-jaan
shauq se leejiye jee,
ishq ke imtahaan
aayiye meharbaan

kaise ho tum naujawaan,
kitne haseen mehmaan
kaise ho tum naujawaan,
kitne haseen mehmaan
kaise karoon main bayaan,
dil ki nahin hai zubaan
kaise karoon main bayaan,
dil ki nahin hai zubaan
aayiye meharbaan,
baithiye jaane-jaan
shauq se leejiye jee,
ishq ke imtahaan
aayiye meharbaan

dekha machal ke jidhar,
bijli giraa di udhar
dekha machal ke jidhar,
bijli giraa di udhar
kiskaa jalaa aashiyaan,
bijli ko ye kyaa khabar
kiskaa jalaa aashiyaan,
bijli ko ye kyaa khabar
aayiye meharbaan,
baithiye jaane-jaan
shauq se leejiye jee,
ishq ke imtahaan

Atul ji,

A very fitting remembrance. Qamar saab’s wonderful contribution to Hindi film music is befitting the golden age that he helped to create, as did many others. It is not possible to portray in words, a creative career that spanned almost 6 decades. The best tribute is to honor the creations of such stalwarts.

And so very a lovely song this is, done so well by Madhubala on the screen.

Absolutely love this song. I am surprised it was not posted till now. I am pretty sure I must have made a farmaish ages ago for it. It is one of my favorites. Easily one of the best picturised on Madhubala. Ah, that mischievous smile.

What was that they said about Helen of Troy “the smile (or was it the face?) that launched a thousand ships?”

I think Madhubala’s face and smile were good enough to launch millions. 🙂
