“Roop Ki Raani Choron Ka Raaja” is a 1961 movie starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman in lead roles, besides Hiralal, Jagdish Raj, Sunder, Manorama, Randhir etc. Lyrics are by Shailendra and music by SJ. This movie has a few very memorable songs.
The best one of them all is “Tum To Dil Ke Taar Chhed Kar, Ho Gaye Bekhabar”. This is played two times in the movie, once male voice, Talat singing and lip synced by Dev Anand, and second time by Lata, lip synced by Waheeda. In Lata’s version, there is a lead in humming by Talat.I am sure you will just love this song.
The picturization of the Talat version of the song is on a boat. It is a large boat carrying pilgrims from Calcutta to Gangasagar for the annual pilgrimage. Dev Anand is a petty thief, and he is on the boat to seek opportunities for stealing. He is actually following a Seth and his family, with whom he has seen some gold ornaments. Waheeda is a dancer of some importance, and she is also traveling on the same boat with her matron (Manorama) and other companions. They fall in love on the trip, and this song is Dev Anand’s first expression to Waheeda about his feelings.
Later on, during the trip, it so happens that Dev and Waheeda are somehow separated from the boat, and land in a village, where there is a wonderful group dance song (Kahaan jaate hain wo, kahaan jaate hain). (you would wish that Dev was not dancing 🙂 ). A wee bit later after this dance song, Waheeda sings the Lata version of the song, inside a hut, while Dev Anand is pining for her outside the hut. Of course, later on they rejoin the boat somehow and continue the trip.

Song-Tum to dil ke taar chhed kar(Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja) (1961) Singer-Talat Mehmood/Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics (Lyrics are identical in both versions, except the humming in the beginnings)
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho ho
tum to dil ke taar chhed kar
ho gaye
bekhabar
chaand ke taley jalenge hum
ae sanam
raat bhar
tum to dil ke taar chhed kar
tumko neend aayegi
tum to so hi jaaoge
tumko neend aayegi
tum to so hi jaaoge
kis ka le liya hai dil
yeh bhi bhool jaaoge
ye to keh do ek baar
khwaab mein to aaoge
ye to keh do ek baar
khwaab mein to aaoge
khwaab mein to aaoge
tum to dil ke taar chhed kar
ho gaye
bekhabar
tum to dil ke taar chhed kar
apni ek aur raat
uljhanon mein jaayegi
apni ek aur raat
uljhanon mein jaayegi
shokh shokh wo adaa
hum ko yaad aayegi
mast mast har nazar
dard ban ke chhaayegi
mast mast har nazar
dard ban ke chhaayegi
dard ban ke chhaayegi
tum to dil ke taar chhed kar
ho gaye
bekhabar
tum to dil ke taar chhed kar
aaj sabr ka bhi haath
hum se chhootne lagaa
aaj sabr ka bhi haath
hum se chhootne lagaa
ab to baat baat par
dil bhi roothhne laga
kya ghazab hai har koi
hum ko lootne lagaa
kya ghazab hai har koi
hum ko lootne lagaa
hum ko lootne lagaa
tum to dil ke taar chhed kar
ho gaye
bekhabar
chaand ke taley jalenge hum
ae sanam
raat bhar
tum to dil ke taar chhed kar

I absolutely LOVE this song. I remember seeing this movie as a little boy. The only thing I remembered from the movie was this song. I’ve listened to this song many times in the youtube age – and only the other day I was thinking that I should send Atul a farmaish for it.
Thanks a lot, Sudhir, for coming up with it. Lovely song! It totally belongs here.
