Ek teer chalaane waale ne
Posted on: May 10, 2011
During late 1960s and early 1970s, when I was a young kid, I hated the time period between 7-30 AM to 8 AM, because it was during this time that “Puraani filmon ke geet” programme was played on the air by Radio Ceylon. In this programme, songs from 1930s, 1940s and even 1950s were played. The singers were often names that I had never heard of. And their singing styles were found amusing by kids like me.
Now, some four decades on, when I am presumably more “ahem” mature, I find myself yearning for those days when purrani filmon ke geet used to be on the air. What kind of songs were played in that programme ? Here is a song that I just stumbled on, and when I listened to it, I absolutely loved it. It is just the kind of song that I recall listening to in that programme four decades back.
Here is this delightfully typical puraani filmon ka geet from “Pugree” (1948). It is sung by Sitaara Kanpuri and Mukesh. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and the lilting music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad. The song is picturised on Kamini Kaushal and a gentleman who I think is Wasti. I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify him.

Lyrics
ek teer chalaane waale ne
ek teer chalaane waale ne
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa ho
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa
ek hook uthhi hai man mein
ek dard basaa jeewan mein
ek dard basaa jeewan mein
aankhon mein samaane waale ne
aankhon mein samaane waale ne
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa ho
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa
ek geet sunaane waale ne
ek geet sunaane waale ne
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa ho
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa
sharmaa ke nazar jab daalee
ek waar gayaa na khaalee
ek waar gayaa na khaalee
lalchaa ke lubhaane waale ne
lalchaa ke lubhaane waale ne
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa ho
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa
aankhon ko banaa kar bhedi
chupke se mohabbat de di
chupke se mohabbat de di
is ghar ko basaane waale ne
is ghar ko basaane waale ne
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa ho
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa
wo hamse agar poochhenge
ham unse yahi kah denge
ham unse yahi kah denge
ek dil ko churaane waale ne
ek dil ko churaane waale ne
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa ho
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa
ek teer chalaane waale ne
ek geet sunaane waale ne
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa ho
dil loot liyaa haay loot liyaa
