Aankhon mein aankhen daal ke

Posted on: May 16, 2011

When I was young, listening to songs on radio (and specially on Radio Ceylon) was a much looked forward to activity by younsters and grown ups alike. Like always, parents frowned on this activity, because in their opinion, kids should concentrate on their studies, instead of such morally corrupt activities like watching movies and listening to their music. 🙂

One programme on Radio Ceylon, which young kids disliked was the “Puraani Filmon Ke Geet” played between 7-30 AM to 8 AM, culminating in a K L Saigal song as the last song of the programme. The songs played prior to K L Saigal typically had songs sung by Suraiyya,G M Durrani,Rajkumari etc.

Many of the songs had music that I have by now come to realise were composed by Husnlal Bhagatram. In other words, Husnlal Bhagatram’s songs were quite popular in this programme. And the typical Husnlal Bhagatram songs that would be played in the programme would be from “Badi Bahan”(1949), perhaps Chup chup khade ho zaroor koyi baat hai(Badi Bahan) or Chale jaana nahin nain milaake(Badi Bahan).

Now, some four decades later, I yearn for those days when Radio ruled the air waves and we would listen to old Hindi songs, typically composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

These days, one can discover musical gems on internet. Just now I discovered a Husnlal Bhagatram song, and listening to it magically transported me back to those Radio Ceylon days. This song sounds like an archtypically “Puraani film ka geet”. This song has typical Husnlal Bhagatram music, which now a days I love listening to. Husnlal Bhagatram songs sung by a female singer needed to be sung in Punjabi style, often by Suraiyya. Here it is Geeta Dutt singing this song, and she does a great job singing this song with her usual gusto that is her hallmark.

And not surprisingly, this song is written by Rajinder Krishan, who wrote many of the Husnlal Bhagatram compositions that I now a days love to listen to.

Here is this delightful Husnlal Bhagatram composition. And make no mistake, this is an extremely rare song. It is unlikely to be available with any music companies. I am very thankful to the music lover who took pains to record this song off the air and upload it. The sound quality is superb, despite this being a recording from a radio transmission.

song-Aankhon mein aankhen daal ke (Pyaar Ki Manzil) (1950) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram

Lyrics

Aankhon mein aankhen daal ke
aankhon mein aankhen daal ke
wo muskuraa gaye
apna banaa gaye mujhe
apna banaa gaye mujhe
apna banaa gaye
aankhon mein aankhen daal ke
wo muskuraa gaye

dekha kuchh is tarah
meri duniya badal gayi
duniya badal gayi
dekha kuchh is tarah
meri duniya badal gayi
duniya badal gayi
ik lahar pyaar ki
mere dil mein machal gayi
dil mein machal gayi
dil mein samaa ke wo meri
dil mein samaa ke wo meri
duniya pe chhaa gaye
aankhon mein aankhen daal ke
wo muskuraa gaye
apna bana gaye mujhe
apna bana gaye

dil chheen lene waali
nigaahon se kyaa kahoon
nigaahon se kyaa kahoon
dil chheen lene waali
nigaahon se kyaa kahoon
nigaahon se kyaa kahoon
masti bhari nazar ki
adaaon se kyaa kahoon
adaaon se kyaa kahoon
pehli hi mulaaqaat mein
pehli hi mulaaqaat mein
apna banaa gaye
aankhon mein aankhen daal ke
aankhon mein aankhen daal ke
wo muskuraa gaye
apna bana gaye mujhe
apna bana gaye
