Ab pyaare pyaare aawenge aanand din

Posted on: May 16, 2011

Most music lovers of Hindi movie music are familiar with the names of major artists who began their careers in 1940s and later. But the artists who worked in the earlier decades are not all that well known, and worse, it is often believed that they were not in the same league as the artists who came later. Nothing could be farther from the truth, as I have been discovering.

The reason why the artists of pre golden era (1930s and 1940s) are not all that well known is lack of information about them among public. As I have been gaining more information about them,my respect for their formidable talents keeps on going up and up.

Among all the artists of 1930s and 1940s, there is one female artists that I am highly impressed with. It is Shanta Apte. When I was not much aware of her, I thought that she must be a traditional semi literate lady who forayed into movies. I found that I was quite wrong. She was quite a well educated and refined lady and she was in fact far ahead of her times. She was an actress and she was a singer. No, she was not one of those who sang passably for themselves. She was outstanding ! And she in fact was well trained in two different kinds of classical music- viz Indian classical music as well as Western classical music ! She has done something which few other singers may have been able to do since then. There may be many singers who have sung Indian classical songs in Hindi movies. She, in addition to that, has sung an English classical song in an Hindi movie too.

I have already discussed her English song(In the world’s broad field of battle (Duniyaa Naa Maane) ) in this blog that she sang with perfect diction. Here is an Indian classical song in Raag Yaman that she sings with perfection.

Here is this rare gem from “Rajput Ramani” (1936). Narottam Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by K Bhole. This song, even if one is not familiar with classical music (like I am), listening to this song calms your nerves and relaxes you.

This has to be a fantastic discovery of a rare gem from the annals of Hindi movie music.

Atul ji,
Shanta Apte was born in Dudhani,a small village in Maharashtra. She was trained in classical music at the Maharashtra Sangeet Vidyalaya,at Pandharpur.
After Prabhat’s Amritmanthan, she became a singing sensation, due to her ability to counterpoint musical rhythm with gestural spontaneity, which proved a refreshing departure from the then prevalent ponderously stagey style.
Apart from Prabhat, she worked with Bhalji Pendharkar,Phani Majumdar,Master Vinayak,Nandlal Jaswantlal,Moti Gidwani and Raja Paranjape also.
She acted in Tamil film ‘ Savithri ‘ in the title role while the great M.S.Subhalaxmi played the male role of Narada.Shanta Apte also sang in this Tamil film,in Tamil-in the presence of M.S. and got her appreciation too !
She was a rebel in real life also(like her role in Duniya Na Maane-1937).She went on a successful hunger strike at the gates of Prabhat Studios over her contract terms !

Note how spontaneous is Shanta Apte’s performance on this song as against many of her contemporaries who would sing songs on the screen as if the shot has been frozen until the song was over. I will not be surprised if Shanta Apte had sung this song without rehearsal if one compares with the record version which is in slow tempo with some changes in the background music.

This song was based on raag Yaman Kalyan. Compared a similar raaga based song sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the film RAAG RANG (1952).

Audio clip of the original bandish in Raag Yaman sung by Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan which was originally composed by Ustad Villayat Hussain Khan ‘Pranpriye’ (1895-1962) of Agra Gharana.

The bandish ‘main waari waari jaaungi preetam par’ becomes ‘ pyaare pyaare aawenge aanand din’ in the film, the video link of which is given below:
