Madhukar Shyaam hamaare chor

Posted on: June 1, 2011

“Bhakt Surdas” (1942) is a treasure of some great vintage songs, as I have been discovering.

Here is a quintessential K L Saigal song from this movie. This song has to be one of the sweetest K L Saigal songs that I have heard.

D N Madhok is the lyricist and Gyan Dutt is the music director of this superb song.

Song-Madhukar Shyaam hamaare chor (Bhakt Surdas) (1942) Singer-K L Saigal, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Gyan Dutt

Lyrics

madhukar Shyaam hamaare chor
madhukar Shyaam hamaare chor
madhukar Shyaam hamaare chor
madhukar Shyaam hamaare chor
man har leeno maadhuri moorat
man har leeno maadhuri moorat
nirakh nain ki kor
shyaam hamaare chor
chor
Shyaam hamaare chor
madhukar Shyaam hamaare chor

sir pe jaake mukat suhaaye
sir pe jaake mukat suhaaye
maathe tilak nain kajraare
maathe tilak nain kajraare
mukh sundar jyun bhor
Shyaam hamaare chor
chor
Shyaam hamaare chor
madhukar Shyaam hamaare chor

Soordaas ke chor Kanhaiyaa manmohan murli ke bajaiyaa
Soordaas ke chor Kanhaiyaa manmohan murli ke bajaiyaa
manamohan murli ke bajaiyaa
natkhat nandkishor

Atul ji,

Yes, this is probably the most lovely song by KL Saigal. I heard it on the radio, when I was in school, and really liked it very much. In days when cassette players were an expensive novelty, I begged and borrowed one from a “rich” friend, and and with great jugaad and patience, somehow managed to record it on a mono cassette player from the radio. I still have that version. Just love this bhajan.

Nice to know that you too find it to be K L Saigal’s best song. Indeed it is a divine composition to listen to.

This song brings back great memories! I can still remember listening to it in Delhi, on our old Telerad radio (the radio was new in those days!). Thanks for finding this song, because I haven’t heard it since those days.

I remembered this song after a long… long time because Kidar Sharma mentioned this song in his autobiography. I could locate the song here but the audio link is not available now. Here is the new audio link :

There is a touching anecdote relating to recording of this song as stated in Kidar Sharma’a autobiography. Saigal was scheduled to record this song at HMV studio and all the musicians were ready with rehearsal (Snehal Bhatkar was one among them). When Saigal walked in to record the song, he was staggering. Every one thought that the take would have to be cancelled because he looked dead drunk. Standing in front of the microphone while supporting himself with one foot on a chair, Saigal said :

“Yes, I am ready, please ignore my stumbling, it is my silly body that misbehaves. I sing, not with my body, but with my soul and the take will be perfect”.

And the take was perfect.

Yes, Saigal really sang from his soul and this song is the testimony.
