Kyaa yahi jawaani hai

Posted on: June 13, 2011

If you rely upon most sites for knowing about the movie “Chaand”(1944), the only information you may come across is that this movie had Shashikala in it. The fact that Shashikala at that time was only 11 years old is obviously lost on these sites.

“Chaand”(1944) had Sitara, Prem Adeeb and Sapru in lead roles and this movie introduced a new leading lady to movie watchers in the form of Begam Para.

Here is a lovely “coming of age” song picturised on Begam Para. the song is sung by Zeenat Begam with gusto. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Husnlal-Bhagatram were also making their debut as music directors in Hindi movies with this movie.

song-Kyaa yahi jawaani hai (Chaand) (1944) Singer-Zeenat Begam, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram

Lyrics

kyaa yahi jawaani hai
kyaa yahi jawaani hai
har dil hai nikhra huaa
har dil hai nikhra huaa
har raat suhaani hai
kyaa yahi jawaani hai
main gairon se kyun poochhoon
main apno se kyun poochhoon
main gairon se kyun poochhoon
main apno se kyun poochhoon
aayina jo kehta hai
aayina jo kehta hai
tu husn ki rani hai
tu husn ki rani hai
kyaa yahi jawaani hai

kyaa kahoon ke kaun aakar
kyaa kahoon ke kaun aakar
sapnon mein jagaataa hai
kyaa kahoon ke kaun aakar
sapnon mein jagaataa hai
sunte hi meri aankhen
sunte hi meri aankhen
jaane kahaan jaataa hai
jaane kahaan jaataa hai
ye meri kahaani hai
ye meri kahaani hai
kyaa yahi jawaani hai
jaate huye bachpan se
aate huye joban se
jaate huye bachpan se
aate huye joban se
donon se main kehti hoon
donon se main kehti hoon
ye dil ki meri ye duniya
ye dil ki meri ye duniya
ab kaise basaani hai
ab kaise basaani hai
kyaa yahi jawaani hai
kyaa yahi jawaani hai

Atul ji,

The film CHAND(1944) was a Prabhat Production, directed by D.K.Kashap,it was the first independent movie of compsers Husnalal Bhagatram duo. They were the younger brothers of Pt.Amarnath,Music Director of some repute in those days.
Husnalal was more active among them.He personally taught Lata Mangeshkar for 6 years(according to Raju Bharatan,in his Biography of Lata,Lata was emotionally involved in young and handsome Husnalal for few years.)Husnalal could not adjust to Bombay life and left to settle in Delhi, where he died on 28-12-1968.
Bhagatram continued in Bombay, but at the end of career had to work in the orchestra of his earlier assistants Laxmi-Pyare.He died in Nov.1973.
The film CHAND was a love triangle film. The cast included Prem Adib,Begum Para,Sitara Devi,Shashikala,D.K.Sapru,Balakram,Bina Pal,Ram singh etc.
Murari,an adventurous singer in the dancing troup of Menaka,at Lahore, goes to Bombay to become a Music Director.,along with his friend Ghungaroo(played by 10 year old Shashikala). He falls in love with his Landlord’s daughter Raj,but Menaka-who loves him comes here to spoil the show. After many incidents, like bankruptcy of Landlord, his departure to Calcutta,Japanese attack etc,Raj and Murari meet and everything is sweet at the end.
