Ham jaag uthhe hain so kar

Posted on: July 3, 2011

“Ham Ek Hain” (1946) is a movie with a message. in this movie, Durga Khote, a noble widowed matriarch brings up many orphan kids in addition to her own son. These kids are her own son Shankar (Dev Anand), and orphans Yusuf (Rehman), John (Rane) and Durga (Rehana). As can be seen, she is raising three boys of three different religions as her own, thus sending a strong message of “Ham ek Hain” (We are one).

This movie had many debutants in it. All actors playing Durga Khote’s kids were debutants, as was Kamla Kotnis, who plays Dev Anand’s love interest. P L Santoshi, who wore multiple hats of lyricist, dialogue writer and director, made his directorial debut in this movie.

As can be seen from the brief description of the plot of this movie, this story may have inspired countless movies in the coming decades. One can see the seeds of movies with a strong matriarch in this movie, as well as the seeds for “Amar Akbar Anthony” kind of movies.

This movie shold not just be remembered as the debut movie of Dev Anand and a few other. It must be remembered as a landmark movie that may have influenced the stories of several future movies.

Here is a song from this movie that could well be called the theme song cum title song of the movie. This song is sung by Durga Khote and her kids and villagers (she treats the villagers as her own too). When I say the song is sung by Durga Khote and her sons, then it is literally so. This song is actually sung by the actors themselves. yes, this song has the voices of Durga Khote,Dev Anand,Rehman, Rane and chorus. P L Santoshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.
