Sanam raah bhooley yahaan aate aate

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Luteraa (1965) is a typical grade B action drama – a story of pirates and palaces and princesses. The main actors of this film are Dara Singh, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nishi, Helen, Hiralal, Jeevan, Maruti, Bela Bose and others. The storyline contains many threads, including brother separated in childhood, a scheming wazir in the palace who murders the king for the throne, the princess kidnapped, the pirates and what not. Given the star cast, this movie made a reasonably good impact on the box office in its time. But more than the star cast, it is the music of this movie that make it a memorable production. There are six remarkable songs by Lata, and a duet by Shamshad Begum and Kamal Barot. Of the six songs by Lata, four are dance numbers done extremely well, and the remaining two are romantic solos. The lyrics for this movie are written by Anand Bakshi, and the music is composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal.

This song is a romantic solo, which is picturized on Nishi. She is waiting for her lover, and sings this song expressing her anxiety as she waits for him to come, and wonders where he could have lost his way. The words are beautiful and the composition is just superb. The beginning of the song is very soft and melodious. At one place in the song she even indicates that her life may ebb away, as she waits for promised meeting to happen.

Enjoy this gem of a song.

Song-Sanam raah bhooley yahaan aate aate (Luteraa) (1965) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

sanam
raah bhoole
yahaan aate aate
sanam
raah bhoole
yahaan aate aate
bhalaa reh gaye
woh kahaan
aate aate
sanam
raah bhoole
yahaan aate aate
sanam

dil ki baaten to
chhupi si rehti hain
dil ki baaten to
chhupi si rehti hain
woh kya jaane jo
nigaahen kehti hain
unhen aayegi ye zubaan
aate aate
sanam
raah bhoole
yahaan aate aate
sanam

roti aankhon ko
hansaana mushqil hai
roti aankhon ko
hansaana mushqil hai
is bechaini ko
chhupaana mushqil hai
na le wo mera imtihaan
aate aate
sanam
raah bhoole
yahaan aate aate
sanam

mujhse jhhoothhi wo
qasam na khaayenge
mujhse jhhoothhi wo
qasam na khaayenge
unka waada hai
yahaan wo aayenge
magar jaayegi
meri jaan
aate aate
sanam
raah bhoole
yahaan aate aate
bhalaa reh gaye
wo kahaan
aate aate
sanam
raah bhoole
yahaan aate aate
sanam

Arif Bhai,

I couldn’t agree more 🙂
Yes, bunking early morning classes from college to go and see the re-runs of A/B/C grade movies at reduced rates. I used to always go to listen to the songs. The movies may not have any good storyline or direction or acting, but the music and songs were always superb.

In these days of multuplexes, no cinema hall plays the old movies. At least not in Delhi where I stay.

Those were the days. 🙂 😦
