This article is written by Sudhir,a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
The decades of 50s and 60s are known as the golden age of Hindi film music, and that for a good reason. The quality of music and songs was absolutely superb, no matter what the content of the films used to be. One just has to untwine one thread on this time line, and immediately there is a gem of a song to be heard. Maybe it is an obscure film, maybe the song itself is unheard, or not heard for ages. Maybe the sound of the song is such that the first reaction is, whose voice is this, whose composition is this. But just let the song play and simply listen to it, and before long you will start loving it, and now the reaction would be, where has been this gem hiding all these years. Atul ji has written over and over again about this phenomena, about finding unheard gems from obscure movies, with every plunge one takes into this ocean of music.
This song is a similar experience. Clicking on a link in YouTube at random, brings up this wonderful melody. The film is Flat No. 9 from 1961. A production by WS Films, Bombay and directed by Ramesh Sharma, the film does have an impressive star cast that includes Ashok Kumar, Saeeda Khan, Tewari, Jagdish Sethi, Dhoomal, Helen, Prem Saagar, Narbada Shankar etc. The lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and the music composition is by Usha Khanna. The film has six songs, and its most famous iconic song ‘Gaa Deewaane Jhoom Ke’ by Mukesh, is already posted on this blog. There is not much more information available from available sources, and I would request the knowledgeable readers to add more information.
The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar, and has been sung so lovingly. The song is a romantic complaint that the gentleman is not attentive to and does not comprehend the feelings in the heart of the lady. Given the start cast, it may be safe to assume that this song is picturized on Saeeda Khan.
Enjoy this superb melody from an obscure movie. 🙂
