Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Teri reshmi zulfen chhoo kar

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Atul ji and Arun ji have talked about the lady music directors of the 30s and 40s, like Saraswati Devi, Jaddan Bai etc. The careers of these lady composers did not last for very long in the industry. Then in late 1950s, another lady music director made a debut (with Dil Deke Dekho, 1959), and the industry was introduced to Usha Khanna. A career that is still continuing, Usha Khanna has now been active in the industry for a little more than fifty years. Her career was most active in the 1960s and up to the mid 90s, after which her assignments have been few and far between. She never got any Filmfare awards, but in 1983, she was a runner up for the music direction award for the film Souten. In 1979, Yesudas won the best singer award for the song ‘Dil Ke Tukde Tukde Kar Ke Muskuraa Ke Chal Diye’ from the film Dada, with the music composed by Usha Khanna.

Aag is a film from 1967, which was the busiest time of her career. Produced and directed by Naresh Kumar under the banner of Dimple Films, this film’s star cast includes Feroze Khan, Mumtaz, Shyama, Achla Sachdev, Jeevan, Aruna Irani, Madan Puri, Sunder, Mohan Choti, Manohar Deepak, Tun Tun, Bipn Gupta, Indira Bansal, Randheer etc. The lyrics credits are shared between Asad Bhopali and Indeewar, with Asad Saab having penned 6 of the 8 songs in this film. This song is a duet sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle. From the rhythm of the music, it appears that this song could have been picturised as horse riding song, or a horse carriage song. Most likely the male actor onscreen for this song is Feroze Khan. I will not hazard as to the name of the actress who is part of this song on screen.

Enjoy this simple lilting melody, a song of two young hearts in love, expressing.

aaaa aaaa aaaa
aaaa aaaa aaaa

teri reshmi zulfen chhoo kar
jab baad-e-sabaa aati hi
har saans mehak jaati hai
har saans mehak jaati hai
tere pyaar se ae mere hamdum
khushboo-e-wafaa aati hai
har saans mehak jaati hai
har saans mehak jaati hai

khanakti choodiyon mein
zindagi ke geet miltey hain
khanakti choodiyon mein
zindagi ke geet miltey hain
teri palken jhapakti hain
to dil ke taar hiltey hain
to dil ke taar hiltey hain
tera phool sa mukhdaa chhoo ke
jab shokh hawaa aati hai
har saans mehak jaati hai
har saans mehak jaati hai

machalti dhadkanen jab
tere dil se baat karti hain
machalti dhadkanen jab
tere dil se baat karti hain
mohabbat ki fizaayen
tere tak madhosh rehti hain
haan madhosh rehti hain
tere pyaar ka naghmaa ban ke
jab dil ki sadaa aati hai
har saans mehak jaati hai
har saans mehak jaati hai

aaaaa aaaaa

Sudhir ji,
Just for the records,SARASWATI DEVI gave music for 26 years, from 1935 to 1961,and for about 40 odd films.

Arun ji,

Thanks for the info update. Yes, I was actually unaware that Saraswati Devi continued to compose for films as late as 1961. I was under the mistaken impression she may have been active till maybe early 50s.
