These days, I love to listen to the songs sung by female singers of 1930s and 1940s. And one singer that I have discovered only just recently is Nirmala Devi. today, she is known to people more as the mother of actor Govinda, but to me she is a star in her own right.
She was a well respected classical singer in her heydays of 1940s and 1950s. She also acted in Hindi movies and sang songs in these movies too. I have listened to a few songs sung by her and I liked her voice a lot. so these days I am seeking out her songs and listening to them.
Songs sung by her are rare songs by now and they are not easily available. But what gems they are ! I would like to discuss as many Nirmala Devi songs as I can lay my hands on.
Here is a lovely song from “Sehra” (1948). Very little information is available on this movie. It seems that this movie had Arun Kumar Ahuja(her husband),Leela Mishra, Maya Devi, S Nazir etc as her colleagues in this movie.
The other members of the musical team are also lesser known names. The lyricist is Surjit Serthi. The music director is S S Mohinder. I hope he is the same as S Mohinder. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie as well as on the lyricist and music director.
Coming to the song, it is a lovely song. such songs deserve to be much better known instead of ending up as such obscure songs.

SEHRA(1948),an Arun Production film it was directed initially by R.D.Bali,who left(or removed ?) half way and then director D.B.Joshi completed the direction.The MD was S.Mohinder and the lyrics were written by SURJIT SETHI.(He wrote lyrics for Paapi-53 which had
Rajkapoor/Nargis,Bahadur-53,nili-50,Sau ka Note-55 etc.).the story and dialogues were by Pt.Girish.
The cast was Arunkumar Ahuja and Maya Devi in lead pair.This Maya devi acted in about 30 films,fromJeevan Prabhat-1937 to Alif Laila-1953 including the controversial film Bharosa-1940 by Sohrab Modi.
The others were Nirmala Devi,S.Nazir,Sheikh,leela Mishra etc.
