Tasweeren banti hain kirnon si chhanti hain

on:While discussing songs, I often like to discuss songs that are rare/ unusual/unexpected in some ways. For example, songs sung by people normally not known for their singing, songs composed by people who are normally known for some other activity, lyricist/music director/singer figuring in the picturisation of the song etc.
Also, sometimes I come across songs where there may be unidentified voices. Identifying that voice gives you a sense of Eureka !
I came across one such Eureka ! moment this morning.
I am a regular reader of a sunday column in a Hindi newspaper called “Dainik Bhaskar”. This sunday column, called “Aapas Ki Baat” discusses some movie related topics and the columnist, Mr Rajkumar Keswani, a movie buff, is discussing Shammi Kapoor these days. He has been disscussing the fact that Shammi Kapoor was quite a music buff even before he came to limelight as an actor. He had a collection of records, including western classical records. He was quite aware of what was going on in Hindi movie industry and which music director was lifting which western tune.
Shammi Kapoor had undergone training of singing, even though his voice was not much heard in movies. Or is it ? Here is a song from “Jeewan Jyoti” (1953). It is a rare song not easily available. After reading about this song in the abovementioned newspaper column, I searched and found that this song was available with me. The description of the song mentions that it is sung by Asha Bhonsle and an unidentified male voice.
I heard this song. It is a fantastic song sung superbly by Asha Bhonsle and towards the end, this unidentified male voice sings the last few likes. This, Mr Rajkumar Keswani tells us, is Shammi Kapoor singing. Yes, this is the Eureka ! moment for me. Now I have been able to locate a rare song where Shammi Kapoor has sung.
Only the audio of this song is available, but from the story of this movie, it is clear that this song is picturised on Chaand Usmani and Shammi Kapoor playing expectant parents. Chaand Usmai is expecting a child and she is singing this song in Asha Bhonsle’s voice, and Shammi Kapoor joins in the end, singing in his own voice.
Shammi Kapoor’s voice may remind one of S D Batish. Yes, he has a voice similar to S D Batish.
So here is this rare and special song from “Jeewan Jyoti” (1953). Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.
PS-Sudhir jee tells us that this song is the very first song that Asha Bhonsle sang under S D Burman’s direction. So this song, which is a rather non descript song in many ways, is turning out to be quite a special song indeed.

aa aa aa aa
aaa aaa aaa
chaandni ki paalki mein baithh kar
koi aane waala hai
tasweeren banti hain
kirnen si chhanti hain
mere khayaalon mein aaj
tasweeren banti hain
kirnen si chhanti hain
mere khayaalon mein aaj
mamta ki baanhon mein
jeewan ki raahon mein
koi aane waala hai
tasweeren banti hain
aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa
wo meri saanson mein
liye hai khushboo
nanhe munne saans ki
dheere dheere ek moorat
ban rahi hai aankh ki
mamta ki baanhon mein
jeewan ki raahon mein
koi aane waala hai
tasweeren banti hain
man ke sapne phool banke
chhoote tan ki daar pe
gungunaakar mast jhhonke keh rahe hain pyaar se
mamta ki baanhon mein
jeewan ki raahon mein
koi aane waala hai
tasweeren banti hain
aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa
jyot se ik jyot jaagi
kalpana ki raah mein
badh gaya ik aur bandhan
do dilon ki chaah mein
mamta ki baanhon mein
jeewan ki raahon mein
koi aane waala hai
tasweeren banti hain
kirnen si chhanti hain
mere khayaalon mein aaj
tasweeren banti hain
kirnen si chhanti hain
mere khayaalon mein aaj
mamta ki baahon mein
jeewan ki raahon mein
koi aane waala hai
tasweeren banti hain

Indeed this song is a rare find. I have never heard of this song though I had two other songs with me from this movie in 78 RPM record.
After listening to this song, it struck to me that in the beginning of the song, the orchestra/tune is close to that ‘Thandi hawayen; from SAZAA (1950) and the latter tune of the song was partly used by S D Burman in ‘Dil pukaare aare aare aare’ in JEWEL THIEF (1967)
Video clip of the song is here :

Atul ji,
Superb,
This is a great find, and definitely a ‘Eureka’ moment. The identification of the male voice is not available anywhere, neither on Hamara Forums, nor Earthmusic, and not in Geet Kosh. But yes, it is Shammi Kapoor.
Another speciality of this song is that this is the first song that Asha Bhosle sang for Dada Burman.
