A wonderful, but scarcely heard melody this one. As I am scouting for more songs composed by Usha Khanna, I came across this gem of a song from the film Flat No. 9, in my collection. As I heard it again, after a long time, I simply had to send it in for posting right away. We have already discussed three songs of this film, and each one is turning out to be a melody that should have commanded more popularity and listening time on the radio waves. Alas, there are obscure films and unheard songs that are almost lost. But play them, and the music lover’s heart will fill with appreciation, and also wonder, ‘where was this song so far’.
The film itself is a fairly unknown entity, with really very little information available so far. Unless we are fortunate that someone releases the disc version of this film, we will have to make do with whatever little is available. A production by WS Films, Bombay and directed by Ramesh Sharma, the film does have an impressive star cast that includes Ashok Kumar, Saeeda Khan, Tewari, Jagdish Sethi, Dhoomal, Helen, Prem Saagar, Narbada Shankar etc. The lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and the music composition is by Usha Khanna.
Making a guess about the picturization of this song. A song about drinking – it is possible that this song could be a dance number by Helen, who is listed as part of the star cast. Once again, purely a guess on my part, not verified from any other source.
The words by Majrooh are just so beautiful, expressing a freewheeling joyous ode to drinking, asking the question ‘So what if I am drunk?’. And the lilting music setting by Usha Khanna, is so ear catching and hummable. And Lata ji has rendered it with such verve and gusto, and so lovingly, you can almost feel her own enjoyment through her voice, as she sings this song.

Heard this song for the first time today. Enjoyed it. I landed on the songs of this movie accidentally. The title of the movie is what attracted me to the movie. “FLAT No. 9” has a special place in my life.
