Dil ye kyaa cheez hai

“Baazi” (1951) was one of the earliest movies produced by Navketan, and it was a pathbreaking movie in more ways than one. This movie paved the way for crime thrillers that became and remained a popular genre of Hindi movies throughout 1950s.
Likewise, the music of this movie also set the rules of the game for such movies. These movies would have a bar dance cum song, romantic songs, sad song for the hero, sad song for the heroines, songs sung by comedian, songs and dances by lesser characters in the movie etc.
One much loved kind of song that “Baazi” (1951) pioneered was the “devil may care” kind of song sung by the hero after he found himself staring at an uncertain future.
The fact that this song in “Baazi” (1951) is sung by Kishore Kumar is also significant. The fact that Kishore Kumar became one of the main playback singers for Dev Anand so early in his career went a long way in establishing his credentials as a singer of note.
This light hearted song is one the first few such songs that Kishore Kumar sang for Dev Anand. Sahir Ludhainvi is the lyricist. S D Burman, the mentor of Kishore Kumar is the music director.
Here is this somewhat lesser known, but no less wonderful, song from “Baazi” (1951).

he
dil ye kyaa cheez hai
ae ae
aur dil ki tamannaa kyaa hai
ae ae
teer par teer chalaa le tujhe
parwaah kyaa hai
arre teri qasam meri jaan
tere teeron mein chhupe
pyaar ke khazaane hain
tere teeron mein chhupe
pyaar ke khazaane hain
mere labon pe dekho
aaj bhi taraane hain
mere labon pe dekho
aaj bhi taraane hain
dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar daan
aa dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar daan
dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar daan
hrr dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar daan
aur honge jinhen
aaraam ke saamaan miley
apni kashti ko to
saahil pe bhi toofaan miley
arre ye geet pasand nahin yaar
haan haan haan haan haan
naiyyaa puraani hai
toofaan bhi puraane hain
naiyyaa puraani hai
toofaan bhi puraane hain
mere labon pe dekho aaj bhi taraane hain
mere labon pe dekho aaj bhi taraane hain
dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar daan
dar dar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar dandar
hrrr

dil ye kyaa cheez hai aur dil ki tamannaa kyaa hai
teer par teer chalaa le tujhe parwaah kyaa hai
This heart of mine
And all the aspirations it carries
Of what consequence are these petty thing
Direct all your arrows to this heart
What does it matter to you
arre teri qasam meri jaan
tere teeron mein chhupe pyaar ke khazaane hain
mere labon pe dekho aaj bhi taraane hain
O my darling, the breath of my life
Upon your name, I promise (that)
The arrows you discharge into my heart
Are treasures of happiness and love for me
(And despite being hurt so often like this)
My lips still sing the songs of joy
tujh se ik chhoti si pehchaan hai, ye bhi na sahi
dil mein ik milney ka armaan hai, ye bhi na sahi
arre teri qasam meri jaan
jeene waalon ke liye laakh bahaane hain
I may be a casual acquaintance for you
(And if it pleases you)
Let this friendship cease
In my heart I have a longing to see you again
(But if it pleases you)
Let this longing be abandoned
O my darling, the breath of my life
Upon your name, I declare (that)
For those who relish life and living
There are a thousand other reasons to live
aur honge jinhen aaraam ke saamaan miley
apni kashti ko to saahil pe bhi toofaan miley
arre teri kasam meri jaan
naiyyaa puraani hai toofaan bhi puraane hain
There will be fortunate folks
Who are blessed with the comforts of life
But for me, my dinghy had to face the storms
Even as it rested on safe shores
O my darling, the breath of my life
Upon your name, I assure (that)
This dinghy is now seasoned
And all the storms are now familiar

Atul ji,
Just like the song “Chaahe Koi Khush Ho. . . .” from Taxi Driver, this fun song from Baazi is also perpetually incomplete. Once again, probably an earliest print was edited and the first antaraa was deleted. Everywhere in the later publications, be it audio or video, this antaraa is missing. Even the film reruns in theatres, whenever I did go to see this film, this part of the song was missing. The original cut must have been as old as the film itself. I remembered the missing antaraa, having heard it decades ago on the radio, when the AIR would still be using the vinyl records for playing the film songs.
In the video version, one can make it out as the two sounds of ‘dandar dandar dandar daa’ are very suspiciously close to each other, and there is a distinct jump in the visual, as Dev Anand approaches the water wheel, and suddenly is going away from it.
I was able to track down the original 78 rpm record with my collector friend and he obliged by sharing the audio recording. Thanks for adding it to the post.
