“Duhaai” (1943) is an extremely obscure movie by now. Little information is available about this movie now. From the little that I have been able to dig about this movie (from imdb), it was directed by V M Vyas. Some of the actors of this movie were Ansari, Shanta Apte, Noorjahaan,Butt Kasar, M Kumar etc.
The songs of this movie are equally obscure. But what songs !
Here is a rare song from this movie. What a lively and wonderful song it is ! It sounds far ahead of the times in which it was created.
This song is sung by Shanta Apte and Rafiq Ghaznavi. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Rafiq Ghaznavi is the music director as well.
Seeing that Shanta Apte (one of my favourite artists of that era) was the lead actress of this movie, the song was obviously picturised on her. I have no idea about the male actor who lip syncs in Rafiq Ghaznavi’s voice. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie as well as on the songs of this movie.

DUHAI-1943 is really a very rare film.No information will be available about it on the net.
However,.I remember this film clearly for 2 reasons-
1. It was advertised as a Romantic Thriller and
2. Two well known top singers of the times Shanta Apte and Noorjehan were acting together for the first and last time,so it was a musical treat.
This was a Sunrise picture presentation and the Director was V.M.Vyas,who together with Mohanlal Dave also wrote the story and screenplay.The dialogues were by a newcomer Zia Sarhadi.
The cast was Shanta Apte,Noorjehan,Mirza Musharraf,Butt kaiser,kumar,Ansari,Zarina,kesari etc..
There were 3 Music Directors in this film,namely Rafiq Gaznavi,Pannalal Ghosh and Shanta Kumar.All lyrics were by Bharat Vyas.
The story was that a rural beauty Neela(Shanta Apte) loves the urbane Rajinder(M.Kumar) and they decide to get married against the wishes of Neela’s father Jugal Babu(Ansari).This Jugal knows a secret.The father of Rajinder had tried to seduce Neela’s mother and was murdered by Neela’s brother Basant(Butt Kaiser).Since then Basant is in hiding only.
It so happens that Urvashi(Noorjehan) a famous singer and Dancer falls for Rajinder and wants to marry him.
Neela’s father tells her,should she marry Rajinder,she should never reveal about Basant killing his father.Neela is in dialemma.
The entire film revolves round this theme and is solved in the end,resulting in Basant going to Jail,Neela and Rajinder getting married and everybody being happy.

Let me be the first one to congratulate you on the century of a completely different kind that you have achieved today on this blog. As I understand, the descriptive note on the film Duhaai (1943) that you have posted above is the 100th such note over the past few months.
I have said it before and I will repeat today – I simply cannot cease to be amazed by the storehouse of information relating to films of the yesteryears. Especially the films that are obscure, unheard of, and for which there is no information available elsewhere. It is so appropriate that Atul ji refers to you as “our in house encyclopedia on film information”. Your breadth of knowledge is marvellous, and in the past you have helped to sort out various queries and differences of opinions on multiple occasions. I, and I am sure there are other readers of this blog, who look forward for your comments to come in as soon as any queries are posted as part of write ups or comments. As is the case for this write up, it is really a treat to be able to receive some information about a film as obscure and rare as Duhaai (1943). Our reference is limited to the Geet Kosh, where we can get some factual information. The larger part of the information, which is the synopsis of the film, plus other information about the film and the artists etc., we owe it to you for posting it.

I have been writing about old films in this blog for last almost one and half year or so.Most of the films were seen by me or atleast I had some first hand info about them.The habit of writing notes after every movie-cast,story,some special point etc-and reading related books in various languages must have helped me.
It is not that I am always right,sometimes I have slipped too,but then it is one of the dangers built into this hobby.My friends like you are always there to help me for corrections.
I thank Atul ji for providing a platform for my expressions and I thank you for consistently appreciating me like a true connoisseur,thus encouraging me to continue.

The newlyweds get blessing of two children in 1943.
yes, way ahead of the time..but than why blessing of six children?
In old time they blessed with the seven (male) children.
“seven” been a most significant number in Hindu philosophy.
The couple conduct seven circuits of the Holy Fire,
The Saptapadi (Sanskrit for seven steps) in wedding.
Besides a religious meaning behind the seven steps, there is also a mathematical rationale on performing the 7 rounds circling the fire. A circle is 360 degrees, all the numbers from 1 to 9 divides 360 except the number 7. It becomes a non-terminating number, hence symbolizing the marriage as indivisible (not separable).
