Lakhi baabul mere kaahe ko deeni bidesh

on:“Suhaag Raat” (1948) or “Sohag Raat”(1948) as it was spelled in the posters , was an Oriental Pictures presentation. It was directed by Kidar Sharma. The star cast had names like Begam Para,Bharat Bhushan, Geeta Bali (debut), Maruti etc.
Here is this lovely song from this movie. It is sung by Mukesh and the picturisation shows an elderly man singing this song with a young Geeta Bali seated at his feet. The man apparently plays Geeta Bali’s father, going by the context of the song.
The lyrics of the song itself are traditional lyrics that are being sung for centuries. Amir Khusro who was a 13th century Sufi saint and poet is credited with these lyrics.
Snehal Bhatkar, who was making his debut as a music directed with this movie composed the music.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Nahmji,
There is one more song “Kahe ko biyahi bidesh re sun baabul more” by Lataji from Heer Ranjha (1948) – Music by Aziz Khan. I have mailed Atulji the Lyrics of this song. He may post it when he gets chance. Here is the link for that sing. Just listen to her voice and feel the pain she has conveyed. Oh My God. Just unbelievable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKRzWdZkvHQ

nahm ji, is that your name or last name?
Yes, I look for Sudha Malhotra too…but I found a Amir Khusru zeehale song that she has sing with Mukesh. I have posted in that blog.
Very rare … I didn’t know about that duet..
Here I found Ashaji..bidai song…with Khusru wordings…from film Suhagan.
But new film Baabul (2006) there is a song by Amitabh Bachchan – Kehta Hai Baabul…that is a most heart wrenching song.

Atul,
A slight correction in your write up.
Snehal Bhatkar’s debut film was NEEL KAMAL (1947) for which he composed music using his name B Vasudev. SUHAAG RAAT (1948) was his second film as a music director and started using his name as Snehal Bhatkar.
Of course, you know it 🙂

Atul ji, Sadanand ji,
Vasudev G Bhatkar (aka Vasudev aka Snehal aka B Vasudev aka VG Bhatkar aka Snehal Bhatkar) is likely the one artist who has used the maximum number of aliases in the credits for the films he worked for. At the time of starting his career, he was employed with HMV. Concerned with certain conflicts of interest in professional and legal terms, he avoided using his own full name in the credits of the films he composed for.
He started his career with the 1946 film ‘Rukmani Swyamvar’. For this film, the music composition was shared between himself and Sudhir Phadke. His name appears as Vasudev in the credits.
Then in 1947, Kidar Sharma gave him the break as an independent music composer for the Raj Kapoor – Madhubala starrer ‘Neel Kamal’. In this film, his name appears in the credits at B Vasudev.
Then in 1948, he composed the music for the film ‘Suhag Raat’, and in this film he used the name ‘Snehal’. His next film was ‘Thes’ in 1949, in which he used the name ‘Snehal (VG Bhatkar)’ in credits. Then in 1950, for the film ‘Hamari Beti’, he used the name ‘Snehal Bhatkar’ for the first time.
Actually, Snehal is the name of his daughter. The name clicked in terms of success of his work, and then ‘Snehal Bhatkar’ became the name he would use in his career. He composed music for about 22 films in Hindi. He also composed for Marathi cinema. His last Hindi film is ‘Pehla Kadam’ (1980). He passed away on 29th May, 2007, at the age of 88.

The elderly man in this song is Pesi Patel, one of the regular character actors in Kidar Sharma’s films.
In his younger days, Pesi Patel was very fond of motor cycles and used to drive his young wife on it. One day there was a mishap and his wife had a miscarriage, following which she died. That night, Pesi Patel placed a rose on the bed they shared and he slept on the floor. This he did every night for the next 50 years or so till he died. Thank you Sadanandji. I was not aware of this person, but when I saw this song 1st time on YT, I loved the song, and the expressions this actor, Pesi Patel has. So I thought of sharing it with all music lovers. So, I thank Atulji for posting this song.
I realized that someone like Shahjehan can build a monument like Taj Mahal for his love, Mumtaz and here was a person, Pesi Patel who showed his love for his wife by just a single rose flower for 50 years and sleeping on the floor for that many years. What a true love! I really cherish this kind of info. Hum sub ko lagata hai ke sirf ek goolab ka phool 50 saal tak? Lekin yaheen to seekhna hai ki “You don’t need millions of rupees to show your true love”. Pesi Patel spent may be a rupee for that.
Thanks again.
