The past decades are a treasure house of musical gems – the more one digs and searches, one finds more new and forgotten melodies that are simply superb musical creations. I know, one of these days, we may come to a point where we have searched and located all the physically existing songs from Hindi films. But I also know, that day is still far off, and we will continue to come up with these discoveries for some more good length of time.
Light House (1958) is now a forgotten film, but it belongs that category of films, whose songs became very popular in their time, and were regularly aired in radio programs. Over a period of time, these songs remained in the memory, whereas the awareness about the films faded away. This film has some very good gems. One of them, a wonderful melancholy sound by Asha ji, is already posted on this blog – “Tang Aa Chuke Hain Kashmakash-e-Zindagi Se Hum”. Today, I am writing about another similar song from the same film. Another emotional creation, another sound of deep melancholy, and another wonderful rendition by Asha Bhosle. A wonder that the film has two such wonderfully sad songs, both by the same singer.
The film is produced under the banner of Sippy Films, and is directed by GP Sippy. The main star cast is Ashok Kumar, Nutan, Nigar Sultana, Johnny Walker, Naazi, Rajan Kapoor, Master Pakku, Shiela Vaz etc. The songs are written by Sahir Lundhianvi, and the music composition is by N Dutta. Only the audio of this song is available, so it is not feasible to comment on the on-screen performance of this song. I request other knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this film and this song.
The words are wonderfully crafted, and simply pierce through the heart – “sukh kyaa, dukh ka sapnaa koi nahin” – what to say of happiness, the eyes do no longer dream even of sorrow. What an incisive look into the depths of sadness in human heart, and what a despondent song. Superb.
kis jagah jaayen, kis ko dikhlaayen
zakhm-e-dil apnaa
Whither should I go
Whom should I turn to
With whom to share
The wounds of this heart
saare jag mein apna koi nahin
sukh kyaa, dukha ka sapnaa koi nahin
In this whole wide world
There none I can call as my own
What to say of happiness
The eyes do no longer dream
Even of sorrow
dil ke armaan pooray ho na sakey
hasnaa kaisa, khul kar ro na sakey
The longings in the heart
Are, as they were
Unfulfilled, waiting
What to say of laughter
Even my tears
Are hushed, subdued
Song-Kis jagah jaayen kis ko dikhlaayen (Light House)(1958) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-N Datta
Lyrics
o o o
kis jagah jaayen
kis ko dikhlaayen
zakhm-e-dil apnaa
aa
zakhm-e-dil apnaa
ho o o
saare jag mein
apna koi nahin
o o o o o o
saare jag mein
apna koi nahin
sukh kyaa
dukha ka
sapnaa koi nahin
ho o o o
kis jagah jaayen
kis ko dikhlaayen
zakhm-e-dil apnaa
aa
zakhm-e-dil apnaa
ho o o
dil ke
armaan
pooray ho na sakey
aa aa aa aa aa
dil ke
armaan
pooray ho na sakey
hansnaa kaisa
khul kar ro na sakey
ho o o
kis jagah jaayen
kis ko dikhlaayen
zakhm-e-dil apnaa
aa
zakhm-e-dil apnaa
ho o o o

Sudhir ji,
LIGHT HOUSE-1958 was having a divine music.Coincidence is that both songs which featured here so far are sad and soulful, but there are many other light songs -equally melodious-in this film.
When there is Johnny Walker in the film, light songs are eminently present and so you have, ‘Gumba rumba gelo o gelo’,’Chima chima chim chima’,Tu kala mai gori’,and’ Nainon se naina laage’.
sahir, known for his meaningful songs, has some of his rare ‘anokhe bol’ lyrics in this film.
This is a story of Bela, accused and stamped to be inauspicious and a
panauti, stays in the towerhose in a village,on west coast.bela(Nutan) always stays indoor with her ailing father and a small boyfriend Pikkoo.
She is dreaded in the villege as many of her relatives died in accidents,so they think she is accursed.
One day,Asok(Ashok kumar)-a fugitive from city who is running from a crime he did not commit, comes with his girlfriend Neela(Nigar Sultana) and stays in a hotel.Once he comes face to face with Bela.Attracted by her charm,he follows her, befriends her and learns about her past and present.Ashok makes her bold, fearless and ready to face the outside world, but while doing so falls in her love.
Narielwala(Johnny Walker),the Hote Manager is an old admirer of Neela, but Neela is now jealous of Bela.
She tries to kill her.Ashok and Pikkoo save Bela.neela is exposed. She is also behind the crime Ashok did not commit in the city.
Finally neela is whisked away by police and Ashok and Bela live peacefully forever !
The music of N.Dutta,my favourite composer,is simply superb.

Most of the Sahir poetry is not meant to give you ‘feel good’ about a moment in your life, but will make you ‘feel strongly about the hidden cause’ of the moment that has arrived in your life.
That’s the diefferent between other lyricists and Sahir.
