Aapke khayaalon mein khoye

‘Khaakaan’ from 1965 is a film I have never heard about before. Given the star cast, with Dara Singh in the lead, it definitely must have been a B grade costume action drama, that probably would have made the rounds of the B cinema circuit, and then went away. This is a song that I have heard on the radio many many years ago, and its melody and memories have remained with me all these years, without really knowing anything about its antecedents. Recently, I discovered this song on YouTube once again, and then found out more about the film and the song itself.
A lovely song rendered in her most spirited manner by Asha ji, supported by a chorus of voices. Another expression of a young heart in love – the song describes the emotions and longings that traverse the sleepless nights, along with the one in love. The words are very simply expressed – yet their overall impact along with the music and the singing voice is just superb.
‘Khaakaan’ is a production from Henna Deluxe, Bombay and is directed by Aspi Irani. The songs for this film are written by Anand Bakshi and the music is composed by N Dutta. The actor credits include Prithviraj Kapoor, Dara Singh, Mumtaz, Bhagwan, Rajan, Uma Dutt, Kammo, Ratnamala, Gul Hameed, Shri Bhagwan, Aruna, Jeevanjkala, Laxmi Chhaya, Polson, Joginder Singh, Saudagar Singh, Karnal Singh, Goldstein, Bruno Arlington etc. It appears that the film must have some good wrestling bouts, given that Dara Singh is in the lead, and the last five names in the list of actors read very much like professional wrestlers. But that aside. . .
Enjoy this oh so very hummable song. And my respect for N Dutta as a music director is growing, as I am making more and more connections between the songs and details of their creators.
aap ke khyaalon mein khoye
hum raat bhar nahin soye
Lost in my reverie
Of thoughts about you
All night I could not sleep
pehle to humko neend na aayee
neend aayee to tum yaad aaye
tum yaad aaye to dil dhadkaa
dil ne dhadak ke phool khilaaye
phoolon ne kaante chubhoye
For a long while
There was no sleep in the eyes
When the eyes started to dim
Then your memories came
And with them came thumping heartbeats
Blossoming flowers (of love) in the heart
But these flowers, pricked like thorns
chaand sitaaro ne dekha hai
apni nazar se haal hamaaraa
aankhon mein saari raat guzaaree
tadpe le kar naam tumhaaraa
khwaabon ke haar piroye
The moon and the stars above
Have seen my plight with their eyes
Spending sleepless nights
In anguish calling your name silently
Stringing together garlands of (your) dreams
ik to mausam thhaa mastaanaa
us par kuchh ye dil deewaanaa
is mausam ne dil se mil ke
chhedaa aisa ek fasaane
sun ke jisey hum khoye
The clime was stimulating
And the heart, it is so besotted (in love)
The two conspired together
To weave such a tale
That made me entranced and forlorn – yet again

Sudhir ji,
KHAKAAN-1965 was a costume drama produced and directed by Aspi Irani. Those days Aspi Irani used to make films based on Parsi folklores or historical parsi stories.Such stories were full of destiny twists and convinient coincidences. They were, ofcourse quite interesting and it had its own class of fixed audience.Even today, there are people like me and Greta Memsaab who love to see and enjoy Aspi irani’s films.
Khakaan is a story of fateful events. It is about how the largely writ of the destiny can not be erased or avoided and how the humans are but a pawn in the hands of fate.
The king of Shiman is worried as his army is facing defeat in the hands of enemy and in the palace, his queen is suffering from the labour pains of delivery.Suddenly news comes that his loyal Commander Rohinton(Uma dutt) has won the war for him and here the queen delivers a beautiful daughter. At that same time a Fakir comes and makes a prediction that this girl will marry the person who will kill the king and that that will be the son of Rohinton. The king(Prithwiraj Kapoor) is now worried.
When Rohinton returns from warfield and learns this,he,as a loyal soldier,
promisses king that he will deliver his boy to him as soon as he is born. But Rohinton’s wife comes to know this and escapes into the jungle. The evil Vazir puts Rohinton in jail.
After 18 years, the princess(Mumtaz) grows to be very attractive. On a hunting mission she is once saved by Khakaan(Dara Singh),the adopted son of a Tribal king. She falls in his love.He is none other that Rohinton’s son.
Suspicious of the princess’s frequent visits to jungle, the Vazir(Gul Hamid or Shyamkumar) follows her and learns about Khakaan who is arrested and presented to the king. The king orders his execution. The princess, with help of friends rescues Khakaan and they escape to jungle and get married.
The king sends his army, which is defeated by the tribals under Khakaan and ultimately, the king is killed by Khakaan.
At the end all is well and Khakaan is crowned as the new King.
The film is very interesting as there are many wrestling matches in it.This is when Khakaan is brought before the king first time.well known wrestlers were roped in for these fights.

Thanks for the detailed synopsis of the film. So my guess about numerous wrestling bouts in the film is correct. 🙂
As always, your comments are most informative. 🙂
