Aise toote taar ke mere geet adhoore reh gaye

It is not just I, but the regulars of this blog too keep coming across rare musical gems from Hindi movies.
Here is what Khyati Bhatt, a regular contributor to this blog, discovered recently. Like her, I too believe that this song has to be one of the most remarkable songs that Talat Mehmood has sung in his career. It is a twist of irony that a song as wonderful as this one should end up in obscurity whereas it deserves to be counted among the best known songs of Talat Mehmood.
Here is this wonderful song from “Gawaiyya”(1954). The song is written by Shewan Rizvi and music is composed by Ram Ganguly. When I check up on this movie, I find that it was an R B Production movie and it was directed by H P Sharma. Starcast of the movie included names like Surendra, VijayLaxmi,Sunder, Sulochana Chatterji, Vijayalaxmi, Sapru, Heera Sawant, Kumkum, etc.
Song-Aise toote taar ke mere geet adhoore reh gaye (Gawaiyya)(1954) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Shewan Rizvi, MD-Ram Ganguly
Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
aise toote taar ke mere
geet adhoore reh gaye
geet adhoore rehe gaye
ho oo oo
aisa toota dil ke tukde
aansoo bankar bah gaye
aansoo bankar bah gaye
pyaar ki ek tasveer banaake
kismat ne khud thhukraa di
kismat ne khud thhukra di
aansoo dekar in nainon ko
mujh ko dedi barbaadi
mujh ko dedi barbaadi
ho oo oo
ek din yahin hona tha yeh
ansoo beh kar keh gaye
ansoo beh kar keh gaye
ho oo oo
aise toote taar ke mere
geet adhoore reh gaye
geet adhoore reh gaye
koi jab yeh geet sunega
pyaar ka phir woh naam na lega
pyaar ka phir woh naam na lega
pyaar kiya to yoonhi jalega
tadpega aur royega
tadpega aur royega
ho oo oo
hum to hain pathhar ke insaan
hum to yeh dukh seh gaye
hum to yeh dukh seh gaye
ho oo oo
aise toote taar ke mere
geet adhoore reh gaye
geet adhoore reh gaye
ho reh gaye
ho reh gaye

Khyati ji
Thanks so much for the wonderful reminder – a very lovely song.
Atul ji,
This song does not deserve the label of ‘obscure’. The film is unknown maybe, as are almost all other details about it. But this song appears on many Talat Mehmood selections on LPs and CDs, and is a recognized gem.
Arun ji,
Thanks for the interesting details about the antecedents of this film. As always, your comments bring out information that is not available elsewhere easily.
One curious thing I noted though. Of the five films listed as produced by Musical Pictures – the music of three of them, Jeevan Jyoti (MD – SD Burman), Yasmin (MD – C Ramchandra) and Gawaiya (MD – Ram Ganguly) is not by Naushad Saab himself, although he is a part owner of the film company. For Gawaiya, it may be understood that the film was produced by RB Productions, and then taken over by Musical Pictures. What could be the reasons behind this?
Thanks and regards
Sudhir

Atul ji,
There is an intersting story behind this film Gawaiya.
Though this was a R.B.Production movie originally, it was bought and released by Musical Pictures Ltd.,after adding 4 songs of Talat Mahmood and making some changes in the script.
This Musical Pictures was a production company floated by 2 equal partners,A.R.Kardar and Naushad.
In the II half of 40s and early 50s,Naushad’s music was in full swing. He commanded the highest price of 1 Lakh per film as his fees, other than related expenses.he was so much in demand those days that producers with chequebooks in hand used to follow him.Kardar’s Natak,Dillagi,Dard,Dard Dulari,Dastaan etc films had a focus on Naushad’s music more that Kardar’s direction during their publicity.kardar was virtually forced to take Naushad as partner in his new company,Musical pictures, which produced Dastaan.
In the trailer of Dastan, shown in Theatrs that time,it used to open with a scene showing Naushad conducting an orchestra and in the background a voice over of a chorus would shout “NAUSHAD’ ‘NAUSHAD’, 40 karod mein ek hi NAUSHAD”.
Musical pictures produced Dastaan,Jadoo,Jeevan Jyoti, Yasmin, and Gawaiya.after this Naushad and Kardar separated mutually and with respect.

Arunji,
Aapne to mere dil ki baat jaan lee. I was thinking of requesting you to give us some info on this movie. Very interesting to know that Naushad was associated with a production company. 1 lakh Rs as a fee, other than related expenses! So much money in those days. That’s what happens when you are in DEMAND. Thanks for the info.
