Jhummak jhummak chal mere haathi

In Hindi movies, there are very few songs that can be described as children’s songs, which comes as quite a surprise seeing that children always form a good percentage of Indian population. Perhaps the fact that they do not hold the purse strings of the family may well be the reason why children’s songs are few and far between.
In Hindi movies, children are often depicted as miniature versions of grown ups and are show to behave like grown ups, instead of letting them be kids and behave like kids.
Here is a chilren’s song from “Poonam” (1952). Here children’s are playing a game which once again shown them trying to act like grown ups, viz they are arranging the wedding of their dolls- a gudda is being married to a gudiya. The song talks about the baaraat of gudda going to gudiya’s home. The baraat consists of baraatis (kids) and a elephant carrying the gudda.
The song is sung by Lata and chorus and it is picturised on several kids. The girl lip syncing in Lata’s voice appears familar but I cannot identify her. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.
Towards the end of the song, the elephant collapses. From the head of the elephant, Ashok Kumar comes out and from the hind portion, his munshi ji emerges.
This fun song is written by Shailendra and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
This song is 500th song of Shankar Jaikishan in this blog. They are the most prolific music directors in this blog and in a way this reflects the dominance that Shankar Jaikishan enjoyed during the golden era of Hindi movie music.

Atul ji,
POONAM-1952 was a Kay arts film, produced by P.N.Arora and directed by M.Sadiq.dialogues and s/play was by Azam Bazadpuri on the story by Ramanand Sagar.
Rajan (Ashok kumar) is awellto do person who is frustrated in life due to his wife.once his car breaks down in a village and he gets introduced to Raj Vaid Chhajju ram Trivedi (Ramesh Thakur) and his daughter Chanda(Kamini Kaushal) who sings very good.he is impressed with them and brings them withhim to his house.he is swayed by her songs, but she starts loving him,not knowing that he is a married man.Once when all three on a picnic,Chanda finds a pretty blind girl and brings her home.Afterwards, the girl’s mother Bina(Asha Mathur) also comes there to look for her.Bina happens to be Rajen’s wife.
Naturally Chanda has to leave that house, shattered to know that Rajan is already married and has a daughter. On the occasion of Babli’s birthday,Chanda goes there to greet her.At that time Bina fires Babli for something.Babli goes on terrace and accidentally falls down to her death.Bina blames Chanda for this accident.disgusted,Chanda leaves the town.
Rajan is actually in love with her,but the realisation comes only after Chanda goes away.He follows her and Bina also follows Rajan, but she meets with an accident and dies.Having lost wife and daughter,Rajen is very sad but Chanda comes back and all is well in the end.

Once I was trying to find some children songs to entertain my granddaughters and found quite a few. I posted some of these in a psot in my blog
http://gaddeswarup.blogspot.com.au/2011/12/some-children-songs-from-hindi-films.html
These may be familiar and you may have posted already. I do not know Hindi, can guess a bit and ask my friends to translate if I particularly like a song. So it is possible that I might have misinterpreted what are children songs but I think there are many more that I used to play to my granddaughters from films like Boot Polish, Ab Dilli Dur nahi etc. Regards,
Swarup
